That is very sad, indeed tragic.

Man, that was rough to get through. Took a major set of balls to write that piece.

I'd no idea it was that bad - I can't even begin to imagine having to cope with that.

I love reading his stuff, but that was heartbreaking.

sigh....

My mom was diagnosed with tongue cancer in 2003. Non-drinker, non-smoker. VERY rare to get this without drinking and smoking.

She had about 30% of her tongue removed, and started chemo.

Didn't work.

She said, "No more cutting.......I'm not going to be a freak that {my niece and nephew} can't look at.....are scared of....."

She passed in 2004.

Think I'd do the same thing...

That is sad, but I agree he seems to be handling it well. I think I'm going to check his blog out more often, too.

What I see in that beautiful and touching bit of writing is the normal process of reflection people seem to go through as they come to terms with their mortality. I noticed it with relatives who had lived a long time and who knew that their death was over the horizon. There's a relevance and a meaning to the shoes they wore and loved when they were 8, for example, and it's important that they let you know this so as to remind you to pay attention to your life as you live it.

What makes Ebert's writing here so compelling is that his life was so full that there's an uncommon richness to his reflections. Like a big, beautiful tree that's had a wet and well-nourished spring and summer, and in the fall has all the more beautiful a display as their leaves die and the tree prepares for winter.

Thanks for posting +1.

he's such a good writer, and he's my favorite movie critic. It'll be a HUGE loss when he's gone.
When he takes on some trite, shopworn flick, he can be so funny as he details all the borrowed plot devices or unbelievable characters or idiotic moments.
He's always pointing out things that should be so obvious.

For instance, he was talking about a film once that had that old familiar moment of the hero frantically working a computer in order to stop something horrible happening. And Ebert wryly noted how convenient it is that computers in the movies always seem to have the major plot devices installed so that they will flash out what's happening: Incorrect Code! Earth Set to Implode in Seven Minutes!
When he likes a movie, you know it's going to be good.
When he dislikes a movie, you the review will still be terrific to read.

Lord give him strength.
