I have lost my mind. I am prefering my old DODs to the boutique stuff

Just for kicks today I dug out four old DOD pedals.

The FX-65 Chorus (three knobs), FX-60 Chorus (2 knobs), FX75B Stereo Flanger and the FX20B Stereo Phaser.

I'm not naming what boutique pedals I usually use, but they're ones that people seem to like.

I had not plugged any of these in for about 12 years. Probably more then that.

These are all Made in the USA and are the ones before DOD changed the design and gave everything a dumb name - i.e. The Milk Box, The Meat Box, The D*ck in a Box and The Grunge Box.

I am seriously impressed with these pedals. Not only do they sound really good, they have lasted this long and work fine.

I understand the boutique, high dollar, true bypass thing and even participate to some extent but man, I am on ebay getting a ton more of these old DOD boxes.

I have the Fx52 Classic Fuzz-pretty cool pedal. I did like the Nyc Big Muff better though-thicker sounding.

Yes, yes you are out of your mind. haha
If you get the tone you like, who cares, besides that you'll save a grip of money on gear.

On ebay these things are like 10 or 20 each. I have a bunch more (green envelope thing, american metal, etc...) I have to dig them out too.

The FX-65 chorus is great. I bet if someone cloned the circuit and put it in a Phase 90 size, true bypassed box, they'd sell for $200 or more and everyone would rave about how good they are. In fact, I like my FX-65 more than my CE-2. I might try one of the flangers one of these days. I can imagine liking it better than my BF-2. I recently read someone saying that the DOD Flanger was good for a warm analog'sound whereas the BF-2 is good for the cold and sterile 80s thing (although it's analog too).

There's a DOD FX fan thread on Talkbass:

My FX-65 has been on my board for 20 years; I've yet to hear another chorus that even comes close.

OTOH, my "Tuna" tuner...sucks!

Yeah, years ago I thought if you put the FX65 in a box and called it a univibe type pedal they would be sought after.

I like the flanger I have much better then the other more expensive one I compared it to.

The American Metal sounds exactly like it should (80s metal) which doesn;t have much use for me. I also had the Hard Rock distortion which had a delay in it.

The TUNA was part of the later series IIRC

Yup. It can get pretty fast and swirly. I like it for that, as well as a clean, clear chorused sound. Heck, between the FX-65, my Phase 90 and my trem, I traded off my 'vibe.

How are the DOD dirt pedals? Anyone care to comment and provide 'it kinda sounds like...' descriptions?

That's funny - I was trying to sell an FX65 on here just last week. Didn't even get one nibble at $35 including shipping. I finally sold it on eBay.

I have a few DOD pedals that are great - the "Classic Fuzz" which is a great fuzz, an analog delay, and a Buzz Box (named after Buzz from Melvins). The battery compartments and switches can be problematic if abused, but overall really good pedals. The Grunge pedal was not very good, though....
