Dirt pedals for Deluxe Reverb

I've always been drawn to amps with great overdrives, decent cleans and so so reverb (JCM 800, Rivera Fandango and Genz Benz Black Pearl as of late)...you know dirty blues, classic rock and hair metal tones. I never really cared to own an amp with pristine cleans and lush reverb. Lately I've been playing my R6 Goldtop w/Bigsby clean through the Black Pearl and while it sounds very nice I was wondering if it wasn't way past time to get a clean Fenderish amp...well, lo and behold, a super clean '78 SF Deluxe Reverb fell in my lap. Damn, what have I been missing for the past 30 years??? Although all my guitars sound great through it, seems that P90's and DR's are a match made in heaven. The only problem is I have to crank it up past 5 to get a decent overdriven tone. I tried using a Toadworks John Bull but it's a bit 'squishy', I prefer a crisper tighter overdrive ala Billy Gibbons. Any recommendations on an OD pedal?

Fulltone OCD or a Crunch Box.

maybe a Box of Rock.

i prefer the Xotic BB Preamp, but it has that compressed quality some don't like

I tried a BOR with mine and found it to be lacking. I believe it was designed to drive a Marshall and not really voiced for clean Fender amps. I tried the Suhr Riot, CMATMODS Brownie and others and my favorite by far has been the Barber Direct Drive. The tone is very full and warm and there's a wide range of tones available. Definitely took my DR (1969) into Marshall territory.

Can't quite get to super-shred gain levels by itself but stacking with a Timmy or other cleaner boost will get you there. Not to mention that I just saw on for $90 in the Emporium. Barbers are the best Bang for the Buck pedals out there IMHO.

Modified Blues Driver or BB Preamp. I like the comp thing it does.

Try some of the Wampler stuff. If youre good with soldering you can try a BYOC clone too. I use a self modded ts9 and a modded Boss 0s-2. I have had a modded blues driver but it didnt do it for me.

Best pedal I've ever used with my DRRI is the Barber Burn Unit EQ. Very warm sounding pedal, and it has 2 independent channels, so you can go from crunch to soaring lead tones. Oh yea, clip the cap if using Ch2, or just run it in Ch1.

I have alot of the different dirt peds mentioned..But the one that really hits it for me (not my rig either) is a older Rat thru a 60's deluxe rev that is awsome!! When I've played thru it, the sound was perfect as was the feel..When hearing other guys play the same setup (jam session) it sounds wonderful ! For referance I have ped board that has a Klon, Timmy and a CrunchBox on it and they sound great..But if I play thru his rig I don't use my board.

kot is definitely a good choice. i love mine but would also highly recommend a kingsley jester. they ain't cheap but it's like adding a second channel to your amp. runs on 2 12ax7 tubes. very amp like feel and response. of course, as always, ymmv...

I've used my Jetter purple gain stage in front of vintage blackface deluxes and sounds absolutely killer at various volumes with either single coils or HB's. OD with definition
