Yeah I've been through this once and it keeps coming up.

Looks like I'll have to make one... they're discontinued!

I'm pretty sure you can still order one off of the retired page. I'd hit Marc up about it but I'm pretty sure he still makes them to order.

Has anyone suggested the "Tone Is In Your Fingers" pedal because that would be as funny as "That Concept Is As Stupid As The Players That Cling To That Belief" pedal.

My cornish ss-3/g-2 duplex does this in spades when set accordingly.

Great.+1
I recently tried one of these and it definitely gets 'approved for further study.'
But $280 at L&M....sheesh...
A sub $100 clone? Where?

'smooth and liquid' has more to do with compression than anything else - you may want to try a 'stack', using a compressor with your favorite kind of distortion or my favorite ~ a fuzz into a TS , tweek to taste ....

This is what I'm wondering.

Firstly, I find stacking dirt pedals sounds more natural than trying to dime the gain on one pedal.

But that's the thing: I don't want DISTORTIONZ!!!!!!!!!!!!! That can sound lame for lead work.

Playing with compression might be the way to go.

I think the Zendrive excels at this.

Right - you could think of a compressor as a distortion pedal without the distortion

Part of the feel of a cranked amp is the compression it gets from the various gain stages and even the trannies and speakers compress ...

and that can be why you prefer stacked gain stages - its like an amp with preamp and power amp stages etc....

you may want to find a compressor that reacts the way you like and then dirty it up with your distrtion preference .....

ProAnalog Dual Drive does this. better than the BB preamp, or any Dumble style pedal for singing leads. I also like it much better than a fuzz.

When I think "smooth" first I think about the kind of peanut butter that I don't like. Then, I think about Allan Holdsworth. Then, I think about Eric Johnson. I agree that some sort of compression needs to be involved for the sustain element. But, to me, smoothness/harshness live inside frequency ranges.

So a POST EQ with bit low-mid bump and a cut up high (like 4.5-6khz) does it for me depending on the guitar. The fuzz into a mild od with an EQ after is nice.

tech 21 double drive?

This pedal has a wide range of tones. It lets you blend even and odd harmonics. It really excels in the compressed liquid lead category -so much so that I'm saving to add a crowther hotcake for my rawer/crunchier overdrive sounds.
