Is he worthy?

the fashion statement i can deal with. not that i'd let him get away with it. i would have had him conform. but the statement about the Olympics being just another competition- i say send him home and give someone who will appreciate it the opportunity.

Payin the cost to be the boss. If you are on your country's dime follow the rules, if you don't want to then move on. Nuff said.

I agree with the stuffy, but I agree about the remark about the Olympics being "just another snowboarding event" makes me think that they should toss him and use the next person who didn't make the cut.

Of course maybe that's because I'm "just an old guy".

Maybe thats why we have so many young kids in trouble. Adults will not hold them accountable for their actions. This is a big deal for the country of Japan.

Heck even the NBA has rules about dress of the court!!!!

Hang on. I'd chalk this sort of talk up to the kind of mental preparation you have to do when you're performing at a very high level. That's EXACTLY what you need to do, to just go out and compete like you always do, like it's any other day. The alternative is to psych yourself out about how unbelievably important today is, and just watch the nerves roll in. I think he's got the right idea.

Rob I totally understand that from the preparation standpoint, but unfortunately this IS in fact a different venue with a different set of circumstances and some of the rules need to be followed. It was a bad remark to make in public, true or not.

Rob I understand what you are saying as well, and while that mindset may be of crucial importance pre-event, in the larger scheme he has to be "part of a team" and "represent his country". This is a HUGE honor for him. And the outfit they wear at the opening ceremonies, while not necessarily a "uniform" is a costume designed to make the athletes look like a team and represents the country.

He should be told to shape up or sent home. The person who finished second to him in national try-outs would be only too happy to have the chance to appear and compete in the Olympics.

And yes I'm old too, but that's how I see it.

Don't read too much into it........

Didn't you ever express yourself/rebel through your appearance?
And the argument about kids in trouble is a strawman.....this kid isn't in trouble....he's an Olympic athlete.

Should he play ball with the dress code enforcement? Sure. It'll keep the governing bodies off his back and it's the respectful thing to do.

Is wearing your suit a little more uncoventionally a big deal? No. Looks like a slow news day at the Yawnsville Olympics......the kid apologized and had agreed to toe the line before the story even ran.

I applaud the kid for making an effort to be an individual...if not his fashion sense.

Remember.....Japanese kids wear uniforms for the span of their school years. The last thing you'd want to do at 21.....is wear another uniform.

Just a little perspective.

I had to wear a uniform from K-8th grade.....I know what it feels like.

Here we go again, expecting athletes to be role models, to reflect what we believe should be their priorities and values. I'm willing to give him a pass if he goes out and does his event to the hilt.
