Any "safe travel" vibes would be appreciated.

No real biggie, just that my son, who just turned 21 yesterday is leaving this morning to drive from San Diego to Eugene, OR (Chula Vista to Springfield). He'll be staying with his girlfriend and her sister for a few weeks while he tries to find work. If all goes well he'll be relocating up there for the foreseeable future.

I'm sure he'll do fine once he's settled but I'm nervous as hell about the 14-16 hour drive. He's promised not to be a hero and try to do it all in one day. He's got a bud up around San Fran who's supposed to let him stay overnight tonight.

You know how it is, relatively speaking there's so many other things he could be doing that would be a heck of a lot more worrisome, (a HECK of a lot!) but they are still your kids and you worry just the same. Saw a little boy crossing the street this morning on his way to school while I was driving to work - I know it was a bit of a whoa moment for me and I know my wife is worried sick and sorry to be seeing her little boy leave home, so it caught her aback for a few secs too.

I bought him an AAA membership so I feel a lot better about that.

Find a good motel stop along the way, and call in his reservation. Pay with your CC. Ask him to call you from the motel. Might work to get him to break up the drive.

When I was younger than him, I drove cars for a living. I used to drive RI to Fl in 20 - 24 hours - straight driving. Coordinated pissing, gassing up and coffee to minimize stopping at truck stops. Youth has its merits - I couldn't do the same today.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and assume you meant "AAA".

: )

In all seriousness, I hope your son has a safe yet memorable trip.
That's a very beautiful drive. All the more enjoyable if you can take your time.

cheers,
vandi

It's a really nice drive.....but the 5 through Oregon is a disaster.

Godspeed.

Maybe Mrs. Donnie B. will appreciate this thought more than you will... but I'm sending Travel Angels to track your son throughout his trip and make sure he stays safe. I'm sure he will. But I definitely understand your concern!

Roooooooaaaad trip!!!! He'll have a blast. He'll never tell you about all the crazy dumb things he did, so you'll never have to worry. Heh heh.

Hey, we live in northern California, and our son lives in LA, 400 miles south. He's 27 years old, and we STILL insist he calls us when he gets home after visiting us. "Dead in a ditch" is always on a parent's mind.
