I need Drums!

First of all I know my way around computers and software (being a graphic designer) but when it comes to music related software my skills are next to zero, so bare with me.

I would like to make my own drum tracks to some of my songs. Nothing fancy, but as I tend to make all the "pounding" in my head as I make riffs and songs, it would be nice to be able to actually hear it.

So I guess i'm looking for some kind of tracking software, that can import some really nice drum samples. But I don't really want the pain of having to map all the pieces...

Is there software where you can basically record loops using a computer keyboard with mapped keys for the different samples? Then maybe put them together, rearrange them...

I hope i'm getting through...

Consider miking some hand percussion instead? You'd be amazed what you can do with a tambourine and shakers.

EZDrummer? There's a number of manageable loops and fills that you can just drag into place in your track. You don't have to get too granular with mapping MIDI regions or anything, unless you want to...

That looks perfect. Good price too.

Thanks for all the help!

For great acoustic drum sounds, I'd highly recommend the Larry Seyer drums. They sound quite real.

There was a steven slate drums deal going on for 20 dollars this weekend, i haven't messed with them before but if they work ok, that price would be hard to beat. It said it had both samples and midi grooves.

Addictive Drums is another good one, I have EZD and Addictive and wind up using AD most of the time....

I want to start by saying nothing sounds better than a real drummer, playing real drums in a real studio. . .but that isn't always possible. So, here's what I've been doing lately. I purchased Superior Drummer 2.0. I think the drum sounds are better than anything that I could do at home. . .I then picked up a Zendrum Zap. . .When I'm tracking, I track to a repeating drum loop that I make to keep time. Later, I come back and play the kick and snare with flams, rolls, ghost notes and tom fills on the Zendrum. I then track the hi-hat hits, open, closed, etc. on the Zendrum keeping time. I then add cymbals on another track. Since I'm actually playing, it doesn't sound mechanical.

You might not want to spend the money for a dedicated instrument like the Zendrum. No problem. . .any keyboard controller works fine and you can pick those up for a couple hundred bucks.

Good luck!

hey that's really cool man, I used to work for Zendrum!! I'm still good friends with one of the creators and see him about once a month, used to play in a band with him actually. Great guys and a very cool instrument, in fact I've got one at home right now trying to set it up to work with Addictive Drums. Gotta give 'em a plug:

EZDrummer + Ableton Live

I got EZDrummer and I use it in combination with Ableton Live 8 and it is totally great. It sounds really realistic and it's dead easy. I used it to create the drums on Time Lapse and Contrails which you can hear on www.myspace.com/wilbertsdream
