You guys with RS wiring kits in Gibsons
I dropped a vintage style RS wiring kit in my 61 Reish SG. My observations after playing it with the band last night: Lots more low end from both pickups. I had to roll off a bunch of low on the amp. It was fierce sounding with the volumes wide open. Way different, better I think, than with the stock wiring. Winding the tone control almost all the way down on the bridge gave the most satisfying woman tone I've ever been able to get with any instrument. I was able to get almost in Tele territory using both pickups. There was a brand new range of tones in the middle position that I had never experienced with a Gibby. That's the love.
The hate: The volume increase from 9 to 10 on both pickups was huge, like hitting a 10 db boost switch. And...it got unacceptably wimpy and dull sounding on anything but 10 when the pickups were used individually. The taper was anything but smooth. Questions: Has that been anyone else's experience? Is that just the way 50s and 60s Gibsons worked? Could it be wired wrong? Are there additional mods to smooth the taper? Is life just simply one compromise after another? Thanks in advance for any input. |

Did you use 50's or Modern wiring?

Sounds like you wired it with independent volumes or your grounds on the last lug of the volumes is cold. That's not normal behavior at all.

I'll recheck the wiring.

Something's wrong! The taper of the volume controls is my favorite part of RS wiring kits!

I have a funny feeling I'm going to be apologizing for this.
