A question about ohms, amps and cabs...
I have two 16 ohm cabs, but my amp has one 16 ohm output or two 8 ohm outputs. How can I run the two cabs with the amp? Is it safe to run both cabs @ 8 ohms, even though they should have 16?

if you're running two cabs at 16 ohms each, the load isn't going to be 16 ohms. it will be either 8 or 32 ohms, depending on if you run them in parallel or series.

How can I run them in parallel or series? The cabinets have one input each, and the only way I can power them is one cable from each 8 ohm output or one 8 ohm output and one 16 ohm and then to the respectable cabs, or what?

The amp probably is referring to the total load for each set of output jack(S).
2 16 ohm loads, one to each 8 ohm jack is appropriate. Wiring the 2 cabs together, in parallel, before connecting to one of the 8 ohm jacks should also be correct. State the amp type and somebody here has probably used one and knows.

It's a JCA20H with the Jet City 1x12 cab and the 1x12 Blackheart cabinet, the same as the epiphone valve jr. cab i believe...

The two 8 Ohm jacks on the back of your amp are in parallel. If you have two 16 Ohm cabs in parallel, that equals 8 Ohms so use the 8 Ohm jacks for your cabs. That is, in fact, WHY the amp has two 8 Ohm jacks.

Sorry if I'm a dumbass, but.. The cabinets aren't connected? How do I put the cabs in parallel? I don't want to fry my amp!

Dude, they will be "connected" when you run one speaker cable to one cab and the other speaker cable to the other cab. Use the 8 ohm taps and run one to each cab. That will be parallel. You won't fry your amp this way.
Ronsonic has it exactly right. |

So it's safe to just plug each of the 16ohm cabinets into each of the 8 ohm outputs? Thanks for the help!

They aren't in parallel (or series) until you plug them in. If you do what he said, plug one cab into one 8 Ohm output and the other cab into the other 8 Ohm output they will then be in parallel.
Series is not that common with guitar cabs so ignore that option for now. So, you need two speaker cables. Plug one each into the cab speaker inputs. Then take the other ends and plug them into the amps two 8 Ohm outputs. |
