Looking for a P90 replacement

I just snagged an Arbor SG for a total steal. My only complaint is the stock P90. Very thin and very noisy. I'm looking for a replacement that is higher output and quieter.

Another concern of mine is that the current pickup is a dogear. Must I replace it with another dogear or is there a simple solution? Sorry for my lack of knowledge on the subject. The deal on the guitar was too good to pass up but the noise is somewhat problematic.

The Seymour Duncan P-90s are pretty hot. Don't know if they make a dog ear. Lots of small pickup winders around that can also provide what you want. Lollar, Fralin, Kent Armstrong and Manlius come to mind of ones that I've tried and liked.

I really dig my Lollars. He makes a dog ear.

Not sure if anyone directly answered but, yes, you do need to replace a dogear with a dogear. Most of the well known brands are good. I like Fralin because you can tell him what you want and he'll do it. Plus HE'S a P90 player himself.

I use a regular old Duncan Vintage P90 in my Les Paul and they sound pretty damn good. It doesn't matter what mount you buy, the dog ear is just the cover. When you take it off, the pickup'll be on the inside. You can just slip the Duncans into your covers and put 'em back on.

Kinman's new noiseless P90's are probably the best on the market; most that have actually compared them to the Fralins have preferred the Kinmans so far. www.kinman.com

As has been mentioned, the dogear is simply the cover -- you put your new P90's into the existing dogear ( or into a new cover if you prefer).

See this is what I figured. I had a guy tell me point blank I needed to replace it with a dogear. I thought to myself, "why can't I just use the dogear cover I have?" He wasn't selling me anything so no harm no foul but this certainly opens up my options.

I have Duncans in my Thinline and the double stack in the bridge sounds great but unless I use both pups it is really noisy when in high gain mode. I understand this is the nature of the beast with these things but I'm sure there are quieter options out there.

Lollar's and Fralin's are two brands on which I did a bit of research. They come very highly recommended and are certainly at the top of the list. Until now I had never heard of Kinman's and dspellman's statement has certainly intrigued me.

Now that my options are more open I am also considering TV Jones' P90. I'm a big Gretsch fan and I love how the TV's sound. Does anyone here have any 1st hand experience with their P90 offering?

Dogears and soapbars are not the same! They mount to the body differently. The baseplate of the pickup has two tabs on dogears, that line up with the extensions in the cover. Those two screws on the end are what hold the pickup in, not just the cover.

Soapbars have the screws going right through the middle. It might be possible to mount a dogear cover over a soapbar... but the two mounting screws in the middle of the soapbar would have to be flat. Otherwise the dogear cover won't go over it.

My favorite P90s are wolfetones. Sound great. Gibsons are a very close second. Nothing else (that I've tried) sounds like a P90 should to me.
