PC Antivirus Protection

We currently have Norton 360 installed. It expires in a week and we are being prompted by Norton to renew. One year of protection costs $80.00, and there is "down load insurance" available for another $7.00. Apparently after you purchase Norton 360, you can download it again within a 60 day period, after 60 days you are out of luck. So if your computer crashes 70 days after you purchase Norton 360, you would have to pay for another year of protection. The download insurance allows you to download the product for an entire year.
Is this normal.?
Is Norton "better" than other protection on the market.?
What do you guys use, do you use anything.?
Thank You

I use Kaspersky Internet Security, and have been very happy with it. I can't remember what the initial purchase price was, but I recently renewed for three years/three machines for around $90 on some deal they were offering at the time. This included a disc...not just a download.

I had Norton. Ditched it years ago. Best thing I ever did. Also tried various free applications (AVG, for example), but they are not nearly as comprehensive, IMO.

Same thing.
Sheez, do I hate Norton.

For me, there are too many excellent free AV programs to be inclined to pay for one.

I've used Avast Free for about 7 years, on both my home network and 15+ systems I've set up for family/friends (definitely NOT power users). Not a single virus infection during that time. I simply set it up to download new AV signatures every 2 hours (from what I've seen, that's about the lowest interval allowed by any AV software, free or not...the default is 4 hours), and forget it.

Lots of other folks use and recommend AVG's free version, too:

I think there is only really 1 true virus protection, simply remove the network card.

Yep, I bit by a virus this week, all of the safeguards and antivirus software on the planet can not stop these little turds from ruining someones day.

Norton is the worst. AVG and Avast are free, and far far far far better.

I do this for a living and agree with this. I personally use MSSE on several computers and none have had issues. Link is in my sig below.
