Any Store-Owners, or Managers here? I've got a goofy question

i'm a dude you don't know, and i come into your store with a ESP guitar case
and you deal ESP
edit: or maybe you DONT deal ESP
and i say "i have a proposition for you... if i can switch equal-parts, for equal-parts, on one of your ESP (ltd) guitars, for my parts... then i will work for free to create for you a "Customized" ESP-Something-or-Other, that you could hang on the windown."
and i pull out a fully-stock LTD EC-1000 with the black hardware and the EMG set
would that be really stupid of me?

cuz i'm getting a git. with black hardware with EMG, and i want to get chrome hardware with passives

Dream on, that will never happen in our store. Stores need to seel stuff to stay in business, maybe you could find another private person to swap hardware with.
I'd say pass on the guitar with black hw and emg's and wait for the one you really want.

so how do people go about getting jobs as tech-people?
i mean like, i've been working on guitars for decades, well, 2 and change
but its not like i could put that on a resume

so i figure, do something like create something unique for a store, with a regular-brand guitar, hype it as "customized", and the store doesn't pay anything and can charge more for it

oh, i live in nyc and i WILL NOT go into guitar center, and i WILL NOT step foot on 48th street, except for 1 place on the corner... but even then, i find guitar shops icky to be in. i get shivers up my spine

If I was the shop owner I'd be trying to sell you the parts.

so if you were a shop owner, how could i get a job as a tech with you?
could i work for free for a bit, to demonstrate my skills?
would i have to bring you a few guitars that i've worked on?

how about, like working for an amplifier company?
doing soldering work, or something?

You could work in my shop as independent sub-contractor, we split the profit 50/50.
In order to get this job, you would need to bring in some setup work you have done, incl. fret jobs and electronic work.

Would not happen because the removal of parts from a new guitar would void the new guitars warranty, I would suggest a forum room swap area and craigslist.

it's not uncommon for some dealers to swap out cosmetic parts like pickguards, knobs, etc. on guitars. but they're still selling them for the same price, and the warranty is handled in-house by techs.

moving from actives to passives and swapping over hardware is not QUITE the same thing.

that's something best done either:

1. you're willing to shell out to convert the guitar

2. you buy the guitar used so then it's whatever.

what you're talking about doing is akin to driving your new 2010 Corvette to the Chevy dealer (whom you didn't buy it from), and asking to change over your rims and hood b/c you like the other style better.

I think the OP wanted to try to make a guitar of the shops something original to demonstrate his work. Sounds like hes after a job and wants to show his skills.

I know a guy that talked a manager into swapping necks from his CS strat (maple) for a cs strat (rosewood) If I had to guess the manager charged him a few bucks and pocketed it.. passed off the renecked strat on somebody (around here nobody probably knew the difference)
