Badger 18 - What Tubes

What tubes you guys got in your Badger 18 ? Preamp, Power, Rectifier

Need to replace mine. Stock sounds good to me, so so far leaning towards replacements with what come stock, but curious as to what has worked for you guys.

I've tried a wide assortment of 12AX7s and come to the conclusion that the change makes very little difference (it's noticeable, but not a huge difference). Unlike a lot of other amps, I've found that the Badger sounds very much like itself no matter what you feed it. Haven't tried too many EL84s though (mostly 'cause I have a lot of JJs lying around for my Guytron).

I like the EL84s Suhr sorts for this amp, but MUCH prefer high gain JJ-ECC83Ss in the preamp - much smoother and fatter than stock Shuguang 9th gen. The stock 5Y3 is great too, but you can still get NOS for pretty reasonable prices. Haven't messed with my 5Y3 yet.

Be careful on changing the rectifier since the B+ voltage should not be raised !
We do have a new tweak to help the rectifier last longer as well.
Just for the record we match our tubes on spectrum analysis as well as do curve traces after we get them pretested from ARS. Not many tube matchers will go thru this trouble.

When I had mine I used JJ ECC803S in V1 and V2, and a Tungsol 12AX7 in V3. I have also read that other people used a Sovtek 12AX7LPS in V3 with success. I stuck with the JJ EL84s in there, I think they sounded fine. Never changed out the rectifier.

Smoother and fatter huh...that sounds good. Did not know the stock where the chinese 9th gen. Haven't opened it up yet so I'm not sure what is in there now.

About the rectifier, I wasn't thinking about changing this one. To be honest, I hadn't thought about it much. Is there ever a need to change this one if the amp is working?
