Cabs : open or closed back? And why?
Will be buying a cab soon & wonder what the difference is between the 2 and if consequently, there's one I'd prefer over the other.
Can anybody educate a newbie like me? lol!

a closed back generally projects the sound better and farther. thats the pro and the con is that the sound doesnt spread around ..when playing a closed back even moving a few steps to the side of the cab the sound changes
with a open back the sound is all around and the sound remains pretty much the same where ever you are in the room of course there are many other things that can and will change this ... cabinet size,,,different speakers and cabinet construction and cabinet size... so for me generally speaking for smaller to med places i go with open back and for med to largerer places i go with closed back... many cabs these days are made so you can have both. they have a removeable panel in the back of the cab that can be removed so you get the best of both worlds

I've tried to like open backs, but just don't like the 'boxiness' of them. Open backs always sound smoother and more airy to me, and have more bottom end. This is at home though, not playing out.

For playing in clubs and being able to hear yourself, an open back cab seems to work best. If you are playing bigger clubs or outside, a closed back cab works better. I suggest you get a head and then you can use the appropriate cab for the venue.

Semi open in studio so we can run Senn 421 in rear, SM 57 in front, Royer Ribbon in front.
Closed 2 x 12' for live use, no bass loss, and sounds better over all. LB BCM

yep, primarily live player here.
i use a closed-back 2x12. plenty of forward projection. i might use an open back in a club where sound levels are critical (and if i owned one...). i've seen guys turn an open back around to face the wall. just an old trick to get the sound you want.

Several cabinet builders actually make convertible style cabs. This would allow you to try both options!
