Crazy Question
If you can send an audio signal wirelessly instead of through cable... could you do the same thing for amp channel switching? Any solution for a channel switcher for your amp that will go long distances?

If you have a 2 channel amp with dual inputs, like a '65 Twin, then I think there might be a way to make this work. You'd need a 2 channel wireless output (or 2 of them that run on different frequencies) and a split/dual receivers going into each channel. I've never seen anything like it though...

If the amp channel switching can be done via MIDI, you just need a MIDI controller and wireless MIDI.
For wireless MIDI, look at m-audio MidAir. If the amp channel switching is done with an ordinary footswitch, either latched or momentary, you need one additional device, a Nobels MS-4 MIDI Switcher. |

It's a much easier job than sending an audio signal wirelessly. For audio you need a huge resolution; many different instantaneous voltages are required to approximate a continuously changing AC signal.
However with a footswitch, you have only a few different signals. For a 2-button footswitch, you have a maximum of 4 states (on/on, on/off, off/on, off/off). One of the simplest ways I can imagine is to use an AM oscillator in your footswitch with 4 separate amplitude level presets (one of which can be "off" or zero signal). Then at the amp end of things, you make an AM detector which demodulates the signal back into those 4 discrete voltages, which can then be used to control your footswitch functions. This is just off the top of my head; there are probably ready-made items that can do exactly what you want (and more), if you figure out where to look. You could power the footswitch with batteries, eliminating stage cables altogether. |
