The person building my amp states that bigger transformers give bigger, tighter bass response. He also admits that another builder of high-quality amps says there is no sonic difference. He claims he can hear it, though.

I tried a bunch of different output transformers in my Pro reverb.
The amplifier sounded a little different with each OT. More bass and tighter bass with more iron...but, the more iron I put on, the less sweet the tone was, and it got more brittle, less pleasing to me. I finally settled on a slightly larger than stock OT made by Heyboer.

small transformer more apparent OT distorion & less bottom end

Large transformer More headroom clarity punch and dynamics, with less distortion

You can Go too big !

The marshall MOJO is a big Transformer that acts like a small one
but has punch like a big one

In the past, I never realized how much of a difference a transformer makes.

But it has a pretty big sonic impact on your amps overall tone. If you play high gain and want a big, tight, punchy sound, you need a big ol' tranny in there!

i know they are not the exact same circuits, but I think of my bandmaster and bassman from the same year as a good way to hear the difference. bandmaster has smaller transformer, so slightly lower output, volume, and bass response... but a little more sparkle/shimmer to the treble side, and easier to break up a lower volume (still loud though!). I would not say one is clearly better than the other, as it depends on headroom and bass response needs.

lower RF crosstalk in the distal terminal windings enables the beat frequencies to cancel upper harmonic impedance mismatches created by the Faraday effect infiltrating the inductive eddy currents.

at least, that's what I've been told......

What part of "lower RF crosstalk in the distal terminal windings enables the beat frequencies to cancel upper harmonic impedance mismatches created by the Faraday effect infiltrating the inductive eddy currents" don't you understand??
