Is the Tube Screamer TS9Dx usually muddy?

I'm checking one out and no matter what setting I have there's a lower end honk. I'm using a standard strat and a tele, My other older strat is bright and seems to take to this pedal better.

Opinions on this piece?

which mode are you using, and could you describe what you mean by lower end honk? i've been using a DX for 'bout 10 years, and have never heard it honk 8) i loved it until I met the OD808, 880, and 820 8)

I have one and never heard a low-end "honk" either. But to your overarching question, is it muddy? Yes, a bit, at least in my experiences. I ended up sending it to Keeley for the Mod Plus, and the modified version was significantly better. Much more clear, among other improvements (IMO). Also, the modded DX cleans up much better than the stock when you roll back your guitar's volume pot.

I've heard that with a standard strat too. Basically, stick to regular and hot modes and you'll be good.

Could it be the amp settings? Muddiness/honking is usually from too much emphasis in the mids. Try lowering the EQ and maybe it'll be better.
