Pickups: Long vs. Short "legs" for what guitars?

When are long and short legs used in pickups? Pickup rings, mounted to the body etc?

I thought it was just based on the depth of the pickup cavity? Maybe I'm wrong though.

I think vintage humbuckers had the longer squared legs, while many modern pickups seem to have the shorter ones. The spacing is the same, and either will probably fit most guitars.

PRS - short

Those are the 2 I can tell you with absolute certainty, having put Gibson pickups into PRS guitars before
