Yeah...I also used it regularly. More before, but...

Way back when, when HC was an "honest" site before it got bought up, it was the best. What pissed me off, they were musicians FOR musicians...we all participated. We wrote reviews and many (I always tried) did the most thorough and useful reviews we could. I used their reviews also a lot to find out more about equipment.

But then they sold out...a good deal of their worth was the reviews, and then they started messing with the reviews. Dropping some, editing some.
Also, they couldn't manage (as the old had) to update regularly. Before they sold out, I used to check into the "new submissions" daily...it was fun and one could find out about new and old interesting equipment.

They just messed it up, and weren't able to even keep up...it isn't that hard, but I don't think they know what they are doing...honestly, different "names" directories for the SAME product, different names for the same model..

It got worse after they sold. I still used them, just not regularly. Now...was just there, they can go F*** themselves. Their site has steadily been less and less user-friendly, and maintained.
The site as it is now, makes no sense, and is not logical in layout.

I'm through with them. That was the final straw.

Hc has become a joke of a forum and I'm bummed how bad it is now.

I posted there since 2005. I just checked out the new version and tried to log in, but I don't have a clue what e-mail address I used back in 2005. So, basically, I will never post there again. I find TGP to be everything I need in a musicians forum.

I didn't like the forums as much at HC but the user reviews were really valuable. It was the best way to get a good description and objective, real opinions about obscure and unusual gear, especially stuff that isn't made anymore.

I'm just scratching my head over how bad it's screwed up...

For a forum that size and the resources they must have available, why wasn't it tested and the bugs worked out before they went live? Why would they even try to create what appears to be an entire new system, when there are plenty of forums (like TGP) that work flawlessly to emulate?

Search terms are limited to 4 characters because the indexing required for 2-3 letter/number searches on the forum software (vBulletin) would be too costly/intensive. Meaning, TGP would have to raise more money to operate the site via increased numbers/prices of memberships or allow advertising.

So you've got to pick your battles, and you've got to pick some number where to cut off indexing.
The admins picked 4 characters for search indexing.

The search function works fine, regardless.

Here on TGP...if you want to search on less than 4 characters, just use the
http://www.thegearpage.net/board/search.php

and choose "search forums using Google"...

I tend to use the built-in search when over 4 because it is quicker and easier, but otherwise the Google is fine.
also you can search for "Gibson SG" in quotes, etc.

Yeah, but here when you get your feet wet, it's just water

Sorry, I just had too. Whenever I visited over there, I used to just not get how many people loved pissing contests.

Google's cached pages is awesome. I'm really glad it exists because this review, which I had never read before you mentioned it, is priceless.
