Fender post CBS didn't restart USA -production til '86/87. The Custom Teles are nice guitars but the vast majority of MIJ Fender or Squier labeled product is pretty decent.

anyone know when they made the change from basswood to alder? what's the tonal difference?

It may have been a price differential rather than a time one, ie more expensive version, more expensive wood.
