marshall basket weave

I just picked up an old (and empty) 4x12 flat front cab. Has coasters and the slots on top... and a single speaker jack. The basket weave has been spray painted black. Anyone have luck restoring these without replacing the weave? Also... how would I determine the date?

Depends on the year of the cab, this can be a super easy fix

1. Depends on the year -earlier cabs had screw in metal handles, later cabs have plastic handles with rivets. Of course the screw in handles are easier to remove

2. You'll have to take the handles off to get to the baffle to remove it from the cab.

3. Just pull out the staples and flip the weave over so the painted side is now unseen and the weave will pretty much appear brand new on the front, it won't even be faded

I've done this a bunch, works like a charm

cool. this one has plastic handles riveted in.

What is the best approach... drill out the rivets and replace with screws? Must I remove them both?

Lastly... the basket weave looks fairly good on the inside. But how do I get the plastic logo off the front with out killing it?

Thanks plexirocker!

I just drill out the rivets and replace with screws. It's not like you have a dead mint original cab and grill cloth so it's no biggie. The handles can be very brittle and easy to chip especially around the rivets. Go Slow

Yes I removed both handles because it's easier

Be SUPER CAREFUL removing the logo. They can get brittle and easy to screw up. These logos have pins in the backside that go into drilled out holes that are in the block of wood behind the logo in the middle of the cab.

I just used a butter knife and would SLOWLY pry underneath the logo a little at a time from one side to the other. You don't want to try to pry one side fully up and leave the rest of the logo flat. Go Slow

So the goal is to bring the WHOLE logo up a little at a time. GO Slow

So is your grill basketweave or check front? Sometimes folks say it's a weave and it's really a check front

You can do it

Thanks... the logo is already broken at the M... hoping to not further the damage.

The weave has a larger black (1/8th inch) strand with a group of smaller beige in between. Is that basket or check?

The check front grill or Basketweave grills are just a general guide to the age of the cab and construction, GENERALLY basketweave grilled cabs are pre-70 and the check fronted cabs are very early 70's to mid to late 70's

Good stuff either way, killer cabs and are much better quality than say the JCM 800 cabs till present day versions.

Bottom cabs (flat front) sound killer and are more highly regarded by many players over the top or slant front cabs, rarer too.

Load up with some killer speakers and you'll just love it

enjoy

Once I got this thing apart I had some second thoughts... mostly regarding how rough the backside fabric was... and maybe buying some new fabric... but then I put it together and am diggin the rich mojo... I think it'll stay rough for now. Not bad for $100 and a couple of hours time.

The thing looks brand new on the inside.

That's a 75 or later cab since it hasn't got gold piping over the top and bottom...but for $100, you scored.
