Amp humm?
I've got a little 5 watt Gibson GA-5...one of the newer Les Paul Jr. re-issues that were made a few years ago. Suits my needs just perfectly except...there's a humm that's always present. Sounds like a radio that isn't tuned to a station. Increases/decreases with the volume control, doesn't matter whether the guitar is plugged in or not.
It's always been this way and I'm only now getting around to thinking that maybe it shouldn't be there? Any suggestions on what might be the cause? Mucho thanks...

Usual suspects man. Start swapping tubes, pre and power.

As a tube newbie, that's very helpful advice. Didn't know that could be the cause of humm/hiss. Thanks.

Hum and hiss is usually an internal cause. If you know what you are doing, you can do some things in there to find the potential source, but if not, bring it to a good tube tech and have them look at it. A properly designed and made tube amp can be plenty quiet.

That's good advice also. I suppose a tube swap is the easiest and cheapest place to start...then off to the doctor if that doesn't do anything?
On another note, I did a Google search for GA-5 amp hiss and what did I find? This thread! Wow...they're fast. Also edited to add that this amp is Class A and it appears from what I'm reading that there's a bit of humm associated with this kind of design?
