Shiva vs Shiva 20th?
I know the 20th has more gain, but it has been said that the cleans aren't as good.
Has anyone actually played both? I am ready to pull the trigger on one or the other but I cannot decide.

My only advice would be to make sure you like KT88's. It seems the majority of people who sold theirs prefer the EL34 sound. I don't care for 88's personally as they make for a dryer sound with less midrange than 34's...sort of like a 6L6, but glassier and not as much saturation.

Maybe it comes down to personal preference, but yesterday I tried the 20th for the first time, and I was BLOWN AWAY by the cleans of the KT 88's. My jaw dropped the moment I heard it - it was so fat and round like no other amp I've heard (into a Bogner 2x12 bottom). I've tried the regular Shiva many times over the years, and dug the clean sound, but the 20th cleans really impressed me.

I like the cleans on my 20th MUCH better than on the regular shivas. Live its not even close. Imho.

I have owned both the 6L6 and EL84 Shivas, and have played the Anniversary several times. I prefer the 6L6 Shiva. The cleans are more Fenderesque and the overdrive is sweeter to my ears. I play more classic rock style stuff, and less of the 80's rock and modern heavy stuff...although my cover band at the time did everything from Albert Kink to Alice N' Chains. I dont use as much preamp gain as some other players might, and rarely cranked the gain on the Shiva past 1 O'Clock, so the extra gain on the anniversary is useless to me.
That being said, I know others who like the anniversary better...they usually are into heavier stuff than I am. They are all great amps. I am dying to check out the Goldfinger 45. Heard some great clips on youtube.

I had a 01 version, the silverback. Loved it, but like an idiot, I traded up.
Got the 20th, dug it, but it just wasn't quite the same. Now I'm back to a 08 El34 green back. This is my favorite version. EL34's sound more open and woody, and the feel is better. The 20th sounded great, but it just wasn't the same. |
