For one thing, I've discovered that Philip rarely plays the fuzz with his guitar volume full up. Watching him a LOT on line (haven't seen him live and in person yet, but I play with the bass player he played with when he was in Uncle Kracker and he knew him pretty well) and listening closely, as well as just trying to experiment with similar gear, I've found you can get beautiful tones with a fuzz face on all the time, and just use the volume on your guitar. I play through a '65 Super Reverb, set pretty clean since it's so loud, and I use an Oxfuzz, Keely Fuzz Head (l like that you can plug it in and it has great low fuzz tone in the germanium setting) and a dunlop Hendrix fuzz and I tend to just kick one of them on and leave it on. All the dynamics come from the guitar volume. I actually like the clean tone I get much more with a fuzz on and the volume of my guitar rolled back significantly then just the amp alone. I has more of a bell like tone when the fuzz is on. I got the idea watching Philip on this video how beautiful the clean sound is when the fuzz is actually on- starts about 1:28 into the video and some posters here on TGP talking about fuzz tones. One in particulare mentioned " guitar, fuzz, delay, amp. That's all you need. Tried it, and he was right! As Philip is playing Dream Away here, the fuzz is on. That beautiful clean tone is actually accomplished with the fuzz into the tape echo, into a super clean Roland Jazz Chorus amp! "Awesome tone, all the way.
