Best Tele compliment evah!!

I'm currently doing a theater gig, last night was the first rehearsal w/ the cast. this theater uses a band loft instead of a pit, we are in a soundproof room above the stage. anyway a castmember who plays ( and plays well, he's playing a killer Taylor 12 string onsatge ) stopped me and asked if I could give him pointers on starting pedal steel cause he loved what I was doing w/ mine! I've been working on faux pedal licks for a while and it cracked me up and made me a little proud. All tele, string bending and pinky vol swells, not a steel in the house!

Getting a complement from a musician is very gratifying. As I try to learn to play I seek advise. I had a well known session guy tell me that I have the potential to be good due in part to my timing. it has inspired me to keep at it. I think that your compliment is great validation for the direction that you are taking.

What show is it man? I used my tele for a run of west side story recently. Sadly none of the dancers noticed

Where did you learn your technique? I feel my hand is just too small to ever get swells from the Tone knob. I know I switch the controls around and would have to do that to have the controls close enough.

I learned alot from watching a Danny Gatton vid and any chickin pickin stuff in various mags. I do mainly vol knob stuff, the tone knob is kinda far for me as well. once you get what the cliched moves are ( like 2nd to maj 3rd bend while holding root and 5 ) you can figure em out all over the neck. So many resources these days, the net is full of amazing faux steelers

Tone knob swells are simply a matter of practice. You'll get over the "gap" if you try. I use 'em all the time and I don't have abnormally large hands.

Added bonus: if you get good at tone knob swells, the volume swells become far far easier to control.
