Tremolo Pedal Suggestions
Hi all,
I'm looking for a FANTASTIC sounding tremolo pedal. Does anyone have suggestions? I play a 65 SRRI, and the tremolo on the amp is far too noisy when turned up, so I want a pedal (analog pref) that will give me a very swampy 50's/60's sound. Also, don't want to spend more than $200ish. Thanks! |

Best-sounding tremolo pedal I've ever heard was the Fullton Supa-Trem. Big and clunky, but has some great features and it really does sound awesome.

Here are the best I've tried:
Diamond Tremolo (I use this - easiest to use, very "clear") Cusack Tilt-a-Whirl Empress Tremolo (2nd choice to me, not as intuitive as the Diamond) Frantone Vibutron (probably the best sounding, but no tap tempo) Those are the ones I would recommend. There are others out there that people like (modded TR-2's, Fulltone, Diaz, etc.), but those four are the best I have personally tried.

I play Fryette and Bad Cat Amps I play PRS, Parker, Gibson, Fender, and Rickenbacker guitars. I avoid playing acoustics like the plague. I use Apogee, Blue, Black Lion, A Designs, Grace, Focusrite, AKG, KRK, etc. to record. I use Logic. Avid annoys me. |

I just bought the Diamond Tremolo. Its more than what you want to spend, but I like the toe tap for tempo.
And there are a few various time signatures that are pretty cool. Take a listen at their website. |

I've never used tap tempo on tremolo pedals, so I don't know if that feature's necessary for me. I have tried a modded Boss TR-2 & an EH Pulsar. I liked both of those pedals for different reasons, but neither have quite the sound I'm looking for. Boss seems very limited, and the EH had some sort of drop in sound when activated.
I am very curious about the Supa-Trem & Frantone..even though it's $$$!! |

I really like my Dr Scientist Tremolessence. It's super tweakable and with the small enclosure size and top input/output and power jacks it's very board friendly. I had the Empress and prefer the Dr Scientist. The Empress sounds great, but I didn't need the rhythm or tap features, so the Dr Scientist was a better fit for me.
PS: You can find them used for under $200 if you wait.

kind of a weird suggestion, but my favorite is the tremolo on the Moog Ring Mod pedal. It is warm and sweet and can cut through very well. Very cool pedal if you can also find a use for the other features.

I had a Catalinbread Sempahore for quite awhile (and that one was quite good), but I wanted something with tap tempo. Bought the Diamond (because I'm a big fan of their compressor) but when I started comparing the features, the Empress Tremolo was much more appealing. I'm a longtime Superdelay user, so I was right at home with the controls and I really liked the various rhythm options that the Empress had over the Diamond. They sound about the same to me too, so I went for the one that I liked the features best on — the Empress.
Got it for $175 used, IIRC. So it's in your budget if you go that direction.

I have a CB Semaphore as my main trem; it does it all, and doubles as a clean boost when you need it. Nothing but good things to say about it.
I also have a Ronsound tremomatic I recently got in a trade. It's a great percussive trem that also has an expression pedal input that controls the rate - I haven't seen many trems with this feature. I know this isn't what you described in your OP, but it's a really cool pedal to check out.

I agree the Boss TR-2 is really quite good, is simple, cheap and just sounds right. I haven't tried any others though...but never found it lacking.

Down the road I want a full featured tremelo pedal with tap and multiple knobs.
I don't use it that often but I have been getting by with a $30 Behringer tremelo. It has 3 knobs (no gain) but I swear for $30 it does the job. It's in a brown plastic enclosure and if you stomped hard enough, I'm sure you could smash it to pieces. |

Farndurk Trema is very much the early, amp-style tremolo you're looking for. That said, nothing wrong with a modded Boss TR2. It's a fine sounding pedal and readily available used.
