What's a poorman's BJFE Honey Bee?

God I love this pedal. I've been playing my bandmates but I just can't drop almost $400 on a OD pedal right now. Can anyone recommend something similar in the $150 or less range?

I've had my eye on a Catilinbread Dirty Little Secret but I don't know if I'm barkin up the wrong tree or not with that one.

I typically play a tele or 335 into a Deluxe Reverb or 5E3

Yes, the MP Sweet Honey can sound similar with the focus knob at 9:00 or so-- some lower priced versions are about to hit the market, but I dont know *exactly* when...

You wont get HNOD sounds from a Catilinbread Dirty Little Secret.
The DLS is GREAT, but it's a different ballpark.
Wait for the cheaper MP range to come out.
Or even better, just save and get the real thing. Sooooooo worth the cash IMO.

The Mad Professor Sweet Honey OD is supposed to be released in a cheaper form in the coming months. It should be in the $180-$200 range so you may find one eventually in the used market in your price range. Although I would say that this is similar, like many have said before, it's much tighter especially in the low end than the HBOD.

In addition there's also...

The Greer Ghetto Stomp. I cannot say anything about the Greer since I have never owned one but the clips seem pretty nice. It seems to be a bit different from the HBOD but it is in that family for sure.

The Dan Zink Bit O' Honey. This is supposed to be the same (or a very similar) circuit re-arranged to fit in a smaller enclosure. I haven't had the chance to put the two side by side (I'm looking to buy or trade for a HBOD in the near future) however, they are great sounding pedals that are very similar to the HBOD (from comparing clips). Also, the craftmanship from the wiring to the enclosure is fantastic. There is a bit of a wait on these right now but new I believe they can be had in your price range. You can contact Dan Zink through his email on his site ( ).

Just an aside. If the HBOD is REALLY what you're after, I'd just recommend saving for one. If you are just after a similar sound these options should help you out.

The SHOD can be similar to the HBOD and the prices across the board (including used market) will drop as soon as the production models hit the market. One pedal that reminds me of the SHOD is the Menatone Red Snapper. Very open, dynamic, and can be very tweedy.

I had a Honey Bee and didn't care for it much. It was ok, but the Clark Gainster and the Greer Ghetto Stomp knocked it right off my board.
