Twin woes

Ok, so my Twin is too loud for my, verging on senior center, honky-tonk that I’m playing…

I’ve got it wired up, factory, with two 8 ohms for a total of 4ohms at the OP xformer – so I’m getting, what I would say is, maximum power – unfortunately, it is too freakin loud (at 2.5 on vol knob)…

If I wired them for a total 16 ohm load , would I be dropping the output power potential, and thus, hopefully the SPL at associated volume knob settings…? (It’s a “THE TWIN”, and, has a three way impedance selector)

Any actual experience on this that would comment on any tone differences.

Question 2: I sometimes play a buddies "Twin Reverb Reisssue", which I don't believe has the imp selection….could I wire those for a 16 ohm load without damage…?
Thanks

No it won't work. The volume drop would not be significant.
Does your amp not have the 1/4 power switch on the rear?
What about using the 'low' input?
Then you can pull two power tubes and disconnect one speaker. That would be a the most effective way to lower the output levels.
Running into a 16 ohm load is not suggested.

These sort of threads always have me wondering why the OP doesn't just use the volume control on his guitar. Back in the old pre MV days most everybody played "amp up, guitar down" even some of those blazing Hendrix solos were actually done with the guitar volume around 6 or 7 not 10. The other thing is if you use the bright switch on some fenders that gives the high end frequencies almost unfettered access to the power section (ie; 80 watts) no matter where the amp volume is set.

well, lemme tell ya watt...

yanked them two middle tubes b4 our jam yesterday... and it did the trick, beautifully...

as alluded, didn't drastically reduce the power, but allowed me to set volume at nearly 3 (just under - b4 had to stay at 2.5) and that's enough (seemingly,) to drive the power section to where it likes to be... tone improved bunches...

thanks,
cutty

you could also get some speakers that are less efficient, That can be a huge difference in volume.

Weber Michigans are fairly inefficient..and a nice sound for Fenders. Just a thought.....
