This bust was partly aided by people involved with the Vick case.

Agree or disagree with the hate spewed towards Vick......but I believe that the media attention and the like associated with his criminal and morbid acts is helping draw attention to a subculture that many in this thread and elsewhere understand to not get enough attention. For this I am grateful and hope that the media and people who are outraged about dog fighting in general or specifically Vick continue to use him as an example as to how gruesome the sport is.
Media attention toward anything will help in awareness, so anything good coming from that attention is solely in response to the raised awareness and not the act or perpetrator.

The dark side of it is that reporting media knows and accepts that a good portion of the population is attracted to violence and most of all the fall from grace. I would say that what "good" comes from such a thing is a byproduct rather than an intended goal.

I have to wonder how folks here would react if someone like say, Mark Knophler was convicted of running a dog fighting ring........

The minute the Vick case comes up all reason and context go out the window. I've never been to a dog fight and never had any desire to go to a dog fight and own (Oh God...did I say I own him?) what may be the most spoiled Lab in the history fo the world but I think Mike has been punished pretty remarkably. Lots of things go on beyond the realm of internet message boards that are not "made for TV." Just today the headlines are about a mine shaft full of dead bodies in Mexico killed in the drug wars. How many recreational drug users here at TGP want to admit to any tangential culpability to that?

No, I agree Donnie.
Vick shouldnt be singled out. He should be put in the hall of shame with the rest of the monsters through history...including every bullfighter who ever stepped into a ring, and any promoter involved with any of this insanity.

The idea that people here or any where try to justify dog fighting in any way is amazing to me.

"Of all the creatures, man is the most detestable. Of the entire brood, he is the only one that possesses malice. He is the only creature that inflicts pain for sport, knowing it to be pain. The fact that man knows right from wrong proves his intellectual superiority to the other creatures; but the fact that he can do wrong proves his moral inferiority to any creature that cannot."--Mark Twain

That Mark Twain was a smart fellar. That quote sums it up. End of discussion.

Can't be said any better

The same way. It's barbaric, disgusting and all the frilly matador clothing won't change that.

I don't get it.

I'll give it another shot.

Months passed since Vick was released and no one said anything about how bad dog fighting is. Someone mentions Vick and people get rabid about Vick. No one talks about the need to do anything about stopping dog fighting, just how bad Vick is for doing it.

To me the inescapable conclusion is that folks become enraged at mention of Vick's name but the issue of animal cruelty by and large escapes their attention.

This in no way excuses Vick, but it says something about us. Perhaps it's just easier to hate than to actually do something about it.

I hope you're right. I don't disagree with those who acknowledge how represhensible Vick's actions were, I'm saying the vitriol rings hollow when it's only focused on him, particularly since he has stopped but the abuse continues. I still haven't read a single post about the failure of society to adopt a zero tolerance policy.

It's easier to just say "I hate Vick."

Bull fighting is no different at all. It's making an animal suffer for nothing more than entertainment. It has nothing to do with being brave, a Man or sport. Anyone who feels they want to get their machismo on, can hook up with some men and ship out the Iraq or Afghanistan where the gut check is compulsory each day. Not some gullible defenseless animal but an intelligent and hate filled man who wants to take your head waits for you there.

Dog fighting, bull fighting is just a bunch of ***** playing tough guy.
