Storing guitars out of the case, like in a gun safe ....

Gibson Les Pauls in particular. I have a couple favorites that would be hard to replace, so they hang around in the safe. I wonder if the guitar leaning on the neck for a long time can damage or warp it?

Maybe you can put in a heel/padding or something so that the guitars don't lean too much.

I have my 58 burst, 56 Custom, 54 Goldtop, 2 black gaurds teles in a 2 hour rated gun safe. I know if there is a fire the nitro will melt off them but the guitars would probably be ok players afterwards and would make a nice insurance claim, which caries over from my business insurance! I have them in non padded gigbags inside sitting on a stack of drywall board.

Maybe I'll eventually buy a bigger safe where I can put a few hangers..... or just insure the crap out of them and hang them on the wall and don't worry about it.

Nitro-finished guitars are susceptible to all kinds of "been doing this for a long time with pressure on the paint" problems. You want to rotate their angle or their lean frequently enough that the gig bag doesn't imprint on the guitar, etc. Hangers, in this case, would be a terrible idea.

The nice thing about putting them in a safe is that you can also put a VCI (Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor) or two in there to prevent metal corrosion. These are the same things that are used in toolboxes to keep those from corroding, the same things used in gun safes to keep those from rusting. Change them out about once a year. They won't affect your finish at all. They're about $8-10 and two in an enclosed space like a gun safe will definitely make a difference. http://www.theruststore.com

Hanging them on the wall guarantees a faster rate of decay of the entire guitar. Here in Shakeytown (Los Angeles) wall hangers fly in the face of earthquakes*, and if you're anywhere near a beach or a lake, expect moist air (and salt, near the beach) to ruin your strings and metal bits far more quickly.

*Most recent earthquake near Calexico moved entire local towns 31 inches. The last Chilean earthquake (8.8) moved Concepcion over ten feet.
