Jensen Mod speakers

I realize these aren't vintage or boutique, nor expensive. Jensen makes the claim they are British voiced and are pretty good for "modern" music. Has anyone tried these? What is the general consensus re: Jensen Mod speakers? Good value or waste of money?

Great value speakers. I've got the 12-70 and the 8-20 and have been very happy with them.

Got the 10-95 in my SCXD. Hella value! Nuttin' wrong with 'em IMO. May not be a Weber Blue Pup or whatever the boutique du jour is, but a solid workingman's speaker,

I had a 4x12 loaded with 12-70's ---- that was a good sounding cab---- can't say about Mod speakers other than the 12-70's

Only one I ever bought was the 12-35 which I found was not suitable for my application at the time.
It seemed well built, but it had an inherent buzzyness to it and tended to be fizzy when even lightly over-driven.
I had used it in a 6550 driven 10W SE amp which was really clean otherwise.

I always thought the " MOD" name was kind of yuppy/hippy wannabe dumb lol

I have 2 12-50's paired with 2 greenbacks in a old v-4 cab and like the combo. They are not very differently voiced from the GB's.

The lower wattage ones don't float my boat but the 12-70 is a superb speaker in its own right. When you consider its price, it's even better value. It isn't particularly efficient, 96.3 dB I think, and I like this. Most of the Eminence speakers I've played have been way more efficient and I don't like that 'in your face' sound.

Denis Cornell uses the 12-70 in his Romany amps and they work superbly together. They aren't the most characterful speaker but this works for me. I like an amp and speaker combination to be something I can tailor to my needs rather than having to work with the amp's sound (for this reason, I'm right off Vox-type amps at the minute). The 12/70 is nicely balanced and doesn't roll off the high end massively like the Cannabis Rex does.

Give the 12/70 a go. What amp/s would you be dropping the speaker into?

Had a 10-35 in a SCXD and it was terrible, overly bright and fizzy.

The best of both worlds. The Jensen 10-70 imparts a warm tone with a bit of chime. I prefer it over the Tone Tubby San Rafael for its brighter, clearer character. The Weber is also a fantastic match.

I used to have a late 70's Super Reverb with 4 Jenson Mod 10-35's in it and it sounded fine. Good speaker for the price, like the one reply said," good working man's speaker on a budget".

One of my favorite speakers in general is the Mod10-50. It's got a really warm / round tone that works great for me. Suggested my bassist try some for his ampeg 810 and he's been using them regularly for over a year now. I even got the other guitarist on the mod12-110. We're a Jensen Mod band I guess you could say.

IIRC Jensen Mods are tailored to modeling applications. They tend to have wider frequency response than traditional guitar speakers to handle the variety of tones. They also run somewhat cleaner than other types of speakers, owing to the fact that speaker overdrive characteristics in modelers are often created in the modeling section as opposed to in the speakers themselves. Not that Mods are FRFP speakers (like in PA systems for example)--they are indeed built for guitar--but they're a bit different beast than conventional types and work somewhat differently. All this, btw, would account for the fizzy thing some people hear from them.

Thanks all. I wondered what the term "mod" was referring to. Modern? Mod is in late 60's British pop jargon? speaker for a modeling amp? I guess all three definitions could apply. I was hoping for a speaker voiced like a Greenback, since Jensen states it is "British" voiced. But I am concerned about the fizzy comments. I'm looking to replace 2 Copperheads in a VR. Something about Eminence speakers doesn't work for my style of playing. Perhaps it is their more "in your face" efficiency. Celestion does make a GM10 now, $125.00 ea. @ Amazon. Same as the 12's. I tried Alnico Webers and those did not sound good with this amp at all. So, I guess I'm looking for a 10" speaker with a lot of character, which the GM does have. Just was hoping not to have to spend $250.00+ The MOD 10-35's looked tempting at $35.00 ea.

Amazing how similar those two speakers appear. The stamped baskets look identical! And even the magnets appear quite similar.
