New string "feel"

I just changed the strings on my les paul and they already sound dead. they dont have that clear ring to them that you normally get with new strings. Im wondering what the cause of this could be. Could it be the guage, string type, maybe the action too low? They are ernie ball slinkys. I havent had a problem with them before.

Are they the same brand / gauge you just took off the guitar?

Were they in the sealed "chip" style bag? I've had older sets do that but not the newer "chip" packaging ones.

What do you mean by chip packaging? They were in a clear plastic case and in separate paper envelopes if that helps lol.

Those are the old packaging. The new packaging is in a sealed bag.

Oh ok, they were strings I bought quite a while ago. Could it just be a faulty set then?

I'd say they are just old and have deteriorated

Yes I realize that but I had ernie balls before and they were not like this. These already sound worn out.

They're dead/oxidized. Get a new set in a shrink wrapped package.
