Sweet Honey Overdrive // Mudhoney

Hi all,

Stupid topic #578343128348687543740218574635849042934, I know

For some reason the SHOD is sticking my eyes out, although no demo I can find really convinces me (and no stores nearby hame 'em).

Maybe it's the name? I want it to sound like honey, but demo's make it sound like wasps? I don't know

On the other hand there is the trex mudhoney that has some very nice demo's, but then I ask myself wether it's just the demo or the pedal that sounds nice

It sure has something to do with the Honey

Now really, I have, err, Naked OD, Blue Boy Deluxe, Boiling Point, Fat Boost 3, and possible more And had the OCD v4 which was too dark/muddy. All very nice pedals, but all are rather trebly than err like Honey

How can I explain, they sound more like PIEW instead of PWOEW for example Sweet Child O Mine has that PWOEW sound, and I want that sound with humbuckers too, but a little more than that. So it must be a very smooth pedal.

Is the mudhoney really what I'm still looking for? Am I looking at wrong pedals? Does anyone have a good sample of either of these pedals??

Thanks already!

Try an OCD v2 or v3 and/or a Barber Small Fry. I wanted to like the BJFE Honey Bee so much that I owned three, but alas it's not meant to be.

I'd say try the Honeybee OD by BJFe if you're looking for "honey" tones. The SHOD is tighter and more modern but the HBOD is spongier and broken in feeling. Smooth and even fuzzy around the edges in some settings. It's similar to the SHOD in that it's a low gainer that is touch sensitive but it's much cozier. Maybe that's more what you're looking for.

I have had the mudhoney for a while. It is a nice pedal. The basic sound is a TS kind of sound, a bit smoother and more lower mids. With the boost engaged you get a ton more gain, a lot like a (very good) rat but less grainy.
Can be fuzzy with the gain maxed, which sounds cool.

exactly.

when i got my first honeybee, i liked it a lot, but told Bjorn "it would be really cool if you made this pedal, but with more tightness, more top end, and just more ZING!"

then i got the SHOD and it was amazing!

but i missed the honeybee

SHOD -- nicely serviced blackface super cranked up to 6, with new caps and speakers and tubes

HBOD -- old ragged tweed combo with tired speakers and tubes

Bobby, this is the best distinction yet made between the two-well put!

Thanks for the replies so far! So the SHOD is indeed a sharper type of distortion?

Anyone with more comments on the Mudhoney? I don't really care for any OCD though, I think it is just not meant to be on that one, too aggressive and single-coil-minded for what I want, although it would be nice to hear some thoughts on the Catalyst too

Yeehaa, nearby store had both Mudhoney and Catalyst in stock.

Was not very impressed with the Catalyst; nice, but too subtle imho... although it sounded nice if I boosted it with the Mudhoney.

Mudhoney did it for me, sounded like something between (or going from, to) overdrive/distortion/fuzz; sounds very honey like for me

The Mudhoney had a nice price reduction, so for 152 euro, it was hard leaving it at the store .. It would have been great if the boost was foot-switchable (but such extra whistle would not justify the price of the Mudhoney II for me).

That said, also tested a Fulltone Distortion Pro, which sounded something between distortion and fuzz, and sounded sweet too, but too close to the sounds I can already make and I had no idea what the 4 bottom pots actually did, so had the too-many-knobs feeling on this one
