www.city-data.com

Search for any location on there and you can talk to many that live there about it.

There are also many other topics of interest on those forums.
Yes, even P&R.

Here's the specific link for Kansas City;

Does church music count? There is a ministry there that has been playing worship music for 10 years 24 hours a day without stopping.

IHOP.org

As an added bonus, there are at least 12 internet experts who claim they are a cult. I like the added drama.

Kansas city is a pretty cool town with a horrible traffic infrastructure. I was there (again) a couple of months ago. There are quite a few things to do, music or not. The newly refurb'd Power and Light district is pretty neat and adjacent to the Sprint Center. Westport, the Plaza and the Boulevard Brewery are all kinda neat, as well. I don't know if I'd wanna live there, but it's cool if you have a few days off.
By the way, KC style BBQ isn't anything like the far superior (IMHO) dry rub BBQ that you'll get in parts of the south. KC style is all about slathering the meat in so much sauce that you can't tell what kind of meat is on the rib.

There is a fair amount of live music there depending upon what you want. While there are bars everywhere... the main central areas consist of the country club plaza, westport, and the crossroads/power and light district. Nothing real cutting edge, but some solid stuff. There is a great little place for blues (built on the back of a bike dealership) called knuckleheads.

The casinos do their thing and of course there is the standard arena show thing going on. The local culture rag is called The Pitch.

If you want something more indy... Lawrence is just 30 miles up the road and home of the university of kansas... one of the best college towns in middle america. Mass Street Music is there, as well as the best brew pub on the planet (Freestate Brewing).

Let me know if you have any specific questions... I lived (kc/lawrence) there for most of my life.

Not sure I would agree with your assessment. I've had plenty of dry run in KC. Dry rub, tomato sauce, vinegar sauce (as in the carolinas) is all good stuff, just different flavors. The American Royal BBQ contest and festival is one of the oldest and largest of its kind.

Anyone who disses KC BBQ just isn't hittin' the right spots. KC has as good a BBQ as ANY city in the nation, period.
Usually the sauce is on the side or you can ask for it that way. But be it Gates, Arthur Bryant's or any number of other places, you won't be complaining about your BBQ

Having lived and worked in this area for a long time, it really depends on your age group. The KC music scene kind of sucks frankly, but if you are younger, Lawrence has a great scene. KC has always struggled to have any real identity and the scene lags. The best blues bars are gone or have management that sucks now, Westport has some good names come through, but isn't much for local bands except the Hurricane.
It isn't a great place to make a living playing. There are a few jazz clubs, but not enough to keep you working.
If you really want to play a lot in this part of the country, you usually have to either play the restaurant/bar & grill type places or travel around trying to get into the St. Louis, Boulder CO, Chicago, Omaha/Lincoln, bars then pull in the other college towns like Manhattan KS, and Columbia MO.
People are nice in KS especially, but KC is a big place that is very spread out. There is no real 'scene' to speak of there.
That's my opinion as a guy who has lived in NE KS for decades including gigging this area. It is not ideal if you are trying to be a pro. It is a GREAT place to have a family, live and play for a hobby.
