I'll bring the wife and we'll take shifts and get paid in Gumbo.

Its like the guys who bring burgers and beer to the shop and get me to work on their guitars. When you look like me, other people know whats the best way to talk me into things

Smokey Robinson had a few different gumbos available at grocery stores for a while, but I can't find them any more. Guess I'll have to learn how to make it myself, that was good stuff.

Though technically a requirement for gumbo in the past, okra has been found to be a totally disgusting vegetable, and as such has been approved for removal from the recipe. Gumbo is better off for it.

Okra is tasty and cures cancer.

None for this one. Okra is not a requirement for all gumbos. Gumbos change radically all across south La (E. Texas and coastal Miss. too). Even from town to town, the differences can be huge.

Growing up in NO, all gumbos had okra (well, almost). Move west towards Lafayette, and I found it wasn't as common. My friends from Lake Arthur would never THINK of putting okra in a gumbo.

Don't believe all the generalizations about La cooking, but certainly eat what you love. If you want okra, DO IT!
