Heads or Preamps w/ Metallic distortion

For example, if an amp had more of a harpsichord quality to its sound as opposed to a piano tone delivery. This is an exaggeration, but you can get what I mean. Thanks

Old school Metallica (Ride the Lightning and before): Marshall JCM800 (2204/2203) cranked with an overdrive pedal pushing the front end.

Newer Metallica (Master of Puppets on forward): Mesa/Boogie MkIIc+w/ graphic EQ.

I only have one suggestion to offer from direct experience - a Mesa/Boogie MkV can cover both sounds on separate channels. Channel 2, Crunch mode is basically a hot rodded Marshall sound and can cover old school Metallica really well on its own and damn near spot on pushing it with an OD pedal. Channel 3, IIc+ mode - well, it's as close as you can get without having a real MkIIc+ on hand.

I'm sure there are other amps that will cover one sound or the other, and perhaps others that will cover both. Those recommendations will have to come from folks with hands-on experience. If you're looking for Metallica tones make sure the Mesa MkV is on your Demo list. Be sure to read the manual (available online at the Mesa website) and take a few notes with you pertinent to what you want to get out of the amp so you can dial in a good starting point for each sound. The amp looks more complicated than it is - the manual clears things up quickly.

Best of luck in your search!

Eeeesh - misread that one. Sorry, please disregard my prior post. (I should read more carefully)

Unfortunately I don't quite understand the distinction based on the OP's explanation so I'm not sure I have anything helpful to contribute. Can you elaborate further and perhaps mention an example in recorded music of a similar sound to what you're looking for?

You're looking for a ring modulator. Or maybe a POG. But those are both good places to start. One more thing people associate with pianos as opposed to harpsichord is sustain, so you might want to throw on a really heavy gate too.

I like saturated, gritty preamp distortion. I also like metallic delivery of the amp tone as opposed to piano-like. A metal pedal into a fender amp does this, but I was wondering if there are amps that do it better than what I am aware of.

Soldano SP-77 preamp - I always felt like I had just eaten aluminum after playing that thing a while. Great sounding pre and very metallic sounding!
