any of the Nikon or Canon DSLR kits in that price range will be nice and have room for future upgrades for lenses, etc. IMO Nikons have an easier to use interface, but both are good systems. Canon tends to be the technology leader.
If you are looking for something a little more compact, The Canon G10 and G11 have gotten great reviews and are very versatile. the Micro Four-Thirds offerings from Panasonic and Olympus are intriguing as well. Nearly DSLR sized sensors in more compact bodies. http://www.four-thirds.org/en/microft/body.html lots of good reviews and info at DPReview.. http://www.dpreview.com |

Got a Canon XSi for my wife for Christmas in your price range. Its a great camera and we're very happy with it...our first foray into the DSLR world by the way. We just bought our first aftermarket lens and already contemplating our second.

While a little less money, i have found the cannon sx20is / sx10is to deliver Fine pics. Not a slr, but more flexible, smaller and plenty capable. If she's a slr fan, maybe not, but these babys are a lot of fun (which photo's are suppose to be) They can get more pics than a "serious" camera that was left at home.

skip the 20d canon and the xsi i have had them both and i ended up selling to the the canon 40d. You can pick one up with a decent lens for easily 600 bucks. Itsa solid camera all metal non of the chaep plastic that is on the xsi and the other x series camera. 40d is a full on professional grade camera.
buy that and you wnt have to upgrade for quiet a while. I shot weddings with mine quiet a bit and it as great all around the 20d aint bad but for 100 bucks more you could easly get the 40d with a way bigger preview screen and alot mor features |
