1979 Greco Super Sounds Strat
Hi,
Came across this 1979 Greco Super Sounds Stratocaster on a New Zealand auction site. I can't seem to find any information online about this particular guitar, except Japanese catalogues, like this: http://psyco.jp/greco/c10_23.html . The guitar in question looks to be the one on the bottom left. Anyone can shed some light on the nature of the beast? Worth the price? Are these guitars generally good guitars (most early 80s Japanese guitars are superb, I'm led to believe). Most importantly, FAKE? Oh, and the serial number is E790554, just in case yall find it a bit difficult to read that. This indicates that it was made in May 1979, according to trusty ole' Wikipedia So, with what little information that i've managed to gather from the interwebz, it seems like it's an SE-700, as shown in the above catalogue. Opinions? Last edited by ketot; 08-13-2010 at 02:02 AM. |

You may want to check out www.digimart.net (get Google Chrome and install the Google translate plugin and it will do the translation automatically for you). Search for Greco, sort by condition ("good order status" in the "translation") and scroll down to the second-hand ones (starting at A+ and down) and you should be able to establish some price range. I believe the 800 model was the top of the range at the time. Guitars from that era are being hyped to mythical status by some websites, so I'm not sure if they represent good value anymore. YMMV.

THis is a pretty cool model. It's based on a guitar Jeff Beck played at a concert in Japan in the late seventies. |

If that price is in NZ dollars then yes...good deal. Every Greco I've seen has been a fine instrument and the prices are only going up.

I played what I think was an 83 Greco Super Sounds and an unknown year Super Sounds when I was in Tokyo this past summer. They we're both great guitars but were priced a little too high for what I could afford (from 60,000 yen to 72,000). It seems like so far the bidding price is great. Both of them felt great, but I ended up finding a Bacchus that spoke to me a lot more. In the end, Greco's Super Sounds were sweet guitars but I wasn't willing to pay what they were asking for.
