Need Advice: 2x12 options (Scumback, Eminence)

I've got a Z-Best 2x12 I need to fill. Handling power needs to be 100W or a bit more.

I already have one Scumback M75-8HP, 65W 8 ohm speaker, would love to pair it with an H75-8HP. Ideally, the M75/H75 mix would be what I'd want most. However, I'm having a hard time finding a used H75-8HP and would prefer not to deal with 5 week+ wait time on a new one, it's also very pricey for one speaker when dealing with shipping to Canada and Canadian taxes (total would be close to $300 Canadian for one speaker).

So, with the wait-time & price factor for a new H75, and difficulty of finding a used one, I'm considering trying some Eminence Private Jacks or a Private Jack/Wizard mix. I can drive about 20min to a store nearby and have a pair today, total price for both speakers about $200 Canadian.

But if I'm a long-time Celestion/Scumback lover, am I likely to be happy with Eminence's versions? Are Eminences too modern or just different? There's part of me that thinks Marshalls just belong with Celestions/Scumbacks.

I play an LP with Seth Lovers with a Marshall Vintage Modern 2466 head, mainly go for early ZZ Top tones, with some 70s hard rock in there as well (UFO, Thin Lizzy). I love Celestion greenbacks (well worked-in), huge part of my tone and have also had good experiences with Scumbacks in the past. Other info: the VM 2466 is rated 80W clean and 100W overdriven, so I don't need more than 100W handling power. I have a 1960bx cab too, so there's not a real rush...

Given the options, what would you do?

1) Keep waiting for a used H75-8HP
2) Spend the extra cash (about $150 more) and deal with wait time for a new H75-8HP
3) Go buy the Eminence speakers today - 2 Private Jacks or Private Jack/Wizard mix

There may be no 5 week wait for Scumbacks right now. I'm in Toronto and placed an an order for a 65w M75 and H75, both 16ohm this weekend and Jim had available stock. Doesn't hurt to send him a note and ask. With his sale right now and if you break them in yourself, even after border taxes your total price should be closer to $200 than $300.

I have a pair of the current 25W Greenbacks in my Z-Best. They are spectacular with my Galaxie and Jr NR.

I want to try a Scumback M55/M75 pair - only money, or the lack of it, prevents me from trying that out already.

4) Use a regular Greenback until a new/used Scumback finds its way to you.

Yes, the sale helps, although it still puts it at around $260 Canadian for the single speaker, by my math (which is often questionable... ). But if there's no 5-week wait, could be worth it. Thanks for the info.

That would make the handling power 50W, I need 100W for my amp.

Sorry, I missed that 100 part. G12-65?

From Jim's latest post http://www.thegearpage.net/board/sho...d.php?t=764666
he may not have what you want ready on the shelf, but I would send him an email anyway. One never knows.

No worries, thanks for the link. Looks like I'm out of luck for a 65W, 8 ohm H75.

I've never tried G12-65s, I don't think they breakup at all, though? The greenback fuzz/crunch is a huge part of my sound - I'm addicted to it.

So there's no votes for trying out the Private Jacks, or a PJ mixed with another type of Eminence? How's the bottom end on a pair of PJs? Better than a pair of G12Ms?

Even better! Problem solved. Really, go with what you want, not what you can settle for.
