Hot Plate Mismatch?

Is it safe to run an amp on 8ohm, connected to a 16ohm Hot Plate, into an 8ohm cabinet?

this is directly from the Hotplate manual http://www.thdelectronics.com/pdf/HP...l%20060405.pdf

Q. Can I still use the Hot Plate if it has a different impedance than my amp? A. ONLY if the impedance of the Hot Plate is EQUAL TO OR GREATER THAN that of the amp. However, this will lessen the effectiveness of the Hot Plate’s tone controls.

Q. If I am using just one speaker cabinet, can I still use the Hot Plate if it has a different impedance than my speaker cabinet? A. ONLY if the impedance of the speakers is equal to or greater than the amplifier, AND the impedance of the Hot Plate is equal to or greater than the amp. Again, this will lessen the effectiveness of the Hot Plate’s tone controls.

My interpretation of this would be:

"if the impedance of the speakers is equal to or greater than the amplifier"

in this case, yes; 8 ohms and 8 ohms

"AND the impedance of the Hot Plate is equal to or greater than the amp. Again, this will lessen the effectiveness of the Hot Plate’s tone controls."

in this case, yes; amp is 8 ohms, hotplate is 16, which is greater than 8.

So, wouldn't this be safe, other than losing some of the effectiveness of the tone controls on the Hotplate?

It wouldn't damage the amp short term, long term not sure... but It really won't work effectively and it will kill your tone seriously so it wouldn't be worth having unless impedance matched. I tried one mismatched on a d13 edt and it killed a superb amp completely!

Just curious...did you then try a matched one and it sounded good?

Yes, safe. Tonally, no different if you're not using the Bright and Deep switches.

Used to run my JCM 800 with a mismatched Hot Plate, never had any problems. Same as yours, 8 ohms on the amp, 16 ohms on the plate, 8 ohms on the speakers. It was fine.

I have done it lots of times .... it does not sound a lot different if only off by one (16 used with 8, 8 used with 4, etc) when using the tone switches. You may like it better than a perfect match.

This is not true.

Ed and Andy at THD are the ones that told me this and it is in the manual.

It well not cause any more damage in the long run.

It is only a load on the amp, it is no different than having a speaker hooked up. As for the tone issue I addressed that in the post above.
