I know nothing about speaker repair, but this doesn't look right

This is from an Ebay auction, and to the seller's credit they suggest that the speaker should be reconed or replaced. Does taping the cone actually work or should I be highly amused by this photo?

It's more likely paper and glue, which does work. That speaker looks pretty bad, though.

Yes tissue paper and white glue is an accepted repair technique but having a tear that goes completely across the cone like that is wild!

I agree, recone.

There is a place, was it orange county speakers? Where you can order kits and do it yourself.
One of those places has the spider already attached to the cone so once you align the voice coil with provided shims you glue the spider then the cone edge to the frame.

The worst part looked like cleaning the old glue from the frame.

If you are a DIY type of guy you should be able to do it. Google recone.

What is strange is, I just pulled an old CTS out of my Super that I had no idea had a tear in it, but it ends up looking very much like the above speaker, but it actually sounds GREAT! . . . so far (until I manage to break-in the Weber, it sounds better than the new Blue Pup I replaced it with.

I've patched a small screwdriver hole (oops) in a G12H-30 with a piece of tissue paper and white glue, it sounds fine but I doubt I would try to sell it, and it was a tiny hole compared to that....

I started laughing before I even opened the thread. Be amused.

I don't know . . . like I said my speaker, even without repairs, had huge tears in it and still sounded great.

I'm going to repair it with tissue and glue and see if it still sounds great.

The surround at the bottom of the photo is in worse shape than the tear.
