I currently use a BOSS DD-5 (old school!...kinda) w/external tap tempo along with a EHX Deluxe Memory Boy (Analog w/tap). Both are great pedals but I use them for different scenarios. The BOSS DD-5 is very easy to use and is my go-to delay if I need to switch up the delay type and tempo on the spot. But if I have time to preset my Deluxe Memory Boy...that I do. I love the way the analog delay sounds...warm, full, organic...etc...but it is kind of tricky to tap in a tempo for some reason...it doesn't work quite like the tap tempo on my DD-5 for some odd reason...

anyways, I was thinking about DD-20...but wasn't sure if it came with an analog setting. I owned a Line6 DL-4 in the past...it was almost what I was looking for but just didn't cut it in the end...too clunky and unreliable. I know I won't get the same warmth from the DD-20 as I do from my DMB but I guess I could settle a little to gain a simpler setup in the end.

i have both the DD-20 and a Deluxe Memory Man. i don't really use delay but the other day i put them side by side to compare since everyone raves about the DMM.

to answer your question, the DD-20 does have an Analog setting but it is not analog, it's a digital emulation of analog and imo it did not sound anything like the DMM. BUT the Tape emulation of the DD-20 with the tone rolled off was VERY nice and sounded nearly identical to my ears. a Tone knob is a great asset to digital delay pedals as it really helps warm up the repeats.

so with the ability to program a beautiful analogy setting plus all the other bells & whistles (including easy tap tempo via external pedal) i say you would be very happy wth the DD-20. important to point out it has a great modulation delay too. all in all, very tweakable - a great pedal.

one note: the DD-20 cannot do the wild oscillation mad scientist stuff that the DMM can, which was super fun to play with.

I think you will find a lot of love for the Boss DD-20 among the delay users here at TGP (myself included). Lots of features, good sound, reasonable price.

That's weird that it doesn't tap the same. They both have the same sub divisions for that tap (dotted 1/8, quater, ect..) I'd make sure they're both on the same setting first.

Also the TC electronics nova and repeter might be a option also...

Used to have the DMM. Amazing sounding delay, but for live use, the DD20 is where its at. 4 presets, plus a manual setting and you can set your delays to BPM if your drummer plays with a click.

Nova Repeater is the best delay i've used, and personally i like it better than the dd20.

Sounds like you are on the right track. Just be sure to demo a DD-20 to see if the tap tempo feels ok to you.

Funny, I'm totally looking to do the same thing, replacing my dd5 and dmm with 1 pedal. I'm leaning heavily towards the strymon el capistan. Have you watched the demos? I used my dd5 mainly for dotted eigth work and the memory man for long sustaining swells and slap back. The el cap appears to do both incredibly well. It can clean up to sound close enough to what the dd5 gives and can also give all the tape style modulation/saturation I could want (like the dmm). Only problem is they are sold out as of now...definitely want to get on the waiting list (if there is one).

Might I add you can purchase a separate pedal to store a preset (granted it would be nice to be able to save more presets, but hey, it's better than having to manually tweak the knobs to get the most lush and extended repeats without it going into self oscillation...which is how I plan to use it). One click and I'm there.

Count me in. I´ve been using the DD20 for over five years now and I´m still very pleased with it. It has survived countless gigs without a hick up. It sounds good, has five presets and tap tempo function. Perfect for live use IMO.
