Looking to get a new reverb, what's your favorite?

So,
I used to have the EHX Holy Grail (big box). It was a pretty nice verb but I'm just looking for either a nice analog spring or a really nice & versatile digital. My two choices are either a Hermida Reverb or something like a Verbzilla or mini reverberator. Anyone have their favorite? I'm looking to spend 150$ or less (used/new).

Thanks!

with the money you might spend on a nice pedal you can find one of the solid state fender units (2-300 max, should be less)
I love mine

i've been buying and dumping reverbs for 2 weeks frantically trying to get ready for an upcoming show. i'd say it depends what you want. you say you are "just looking for either a nice analog spring or a really nice & versatile digital" and my limited experience says you have to choose unless you want to spend a lot.

for example i was looking in the $100-150 range too and i assumed i wanted a versatile digital pedal but all the ones i've tried left me cold (Boss, Hardwire, Verbzilla). so i shifted my search to the nice warm analog ambience and am now awaiting shipment of the Hermida ($100 new) and the Wet ($200 new), which were both designed by the same guy. i expect great tones from both but the loser goes back.

from your experience with the EHX i'll bet you'd be happier with a simple pedal that does sweet ambient space and doesn't f' up your tone, as opposed to a swiss army knife of fakey warbles.

the malekko is cool, definitely it's own thing
reminds me of delay oscillation… sort of
it's like you can hear individual segments of the reverb, kind of like short delay trailing off

yea, I love a good early 60s rock reverb. for modern bands I dig the greenhornes and frusciante. I know frusciante uses the Grail but I don't get as good of sounds.

My base idea of what a reverb effect sounds like is Lexicon. I have a rack unit I've used for years, both for emulating both physical resonances of instrument bodies for modeling (EQing and such on the reverb), and then for putting those emulated instruments in the same physical space.

Rack unit aside, at this point the three pedals I own, with no clear winner emerging, are the Electro-harmonix Cathedral, the Digitech DigiVerb, and the Line 6 ToneCore Verbzilla.

I was rather disappointed with the Hardwire reverb, which I really wanted to love. The Nova Reverb is on my list to try at some point.

----

At this point, I've developed ideas of how reverb actually sounds which might differ from most, so you can consider my recommendations with a grain of salt. I did a shoot-out for some friends with some different recordings a few years ago, and the Lexicon won. The other two "reverbs" which were dismissed sounding artificial and having shoddy reverb tails were a stone castle and an old country church. *laugh*

What didn't you like about the Hardwire RV-7? A few people on HC and Strat-Talk.com suggested it as a choice. Sounded good on the PGS video.

I have only one unit but its as good as they get! It's a Demeter RRP-1 Reverbulator. It is a true analog spring reverb. It features two accutroincs 3 spring short reverb tanks that are switchable for short or long decay time or both for a multi dimensional sound. But it costs a lot more than $150.

I have the Holy Grail, Mr. Springy, New Fender (brown) reverb pedal which is very authentic. But my Wet Reverb is the top of the Totem Poll. I just did a gig with it tonight after using the Mr. Springy last gig. It is the best IMO. I did some demo clips a while back....

I can understand the enthusiasm, but "as good as it gets" might include more basic reverb types than "spring," at least for some.

IIRC, I had some issues with limitations on wet/dry mix. To be fair, though, I now wonder if my main problem with it was that I was expecting the sound of my Lexicon rack. *laugh* I found it to be rather similar to my DigiVerb, but lacking a church mode. Given that it cost a bit more than my used Digiverb (less than $40 used), I didn't see a benefit for the added cash.

I may give it another go-around at some point, especially as they don't come up for less than $100 used, for the most part. Those who have them appear pretty satisfied, and there must be a reason for that.

I have nothing but good to say about the whole Hardwire line, incidentally. The CM-2 and the SC-2 are clearing the board of a lot of other dirt pedals, including a few boutique-y things. *laugh* The fact that Hardwire has managed to do so well in terms of tone makes me willing to give the RV-7 another shot.
