EVH tone. Where's a good clip?
I'd like a sample of his basic, core, guitar sound that is considered to be a 'good one' to use as a target. MP3 preferred.
I need something well-recorded, no or little FX, isolated from the band, and not too much weedly, so I can really hear the tonal balance. I'm sure somebody can point me the way. If not EVH, a good clip of one of those excellent clones would do. What's out there? Thanks.

Anything from the Master himself should suffice.
Most of the first few albums are loaded with core EVH tone either in the beginnings, middle and ends of their tunes. My suggestions. Hear About it Later,Unchained,Runnin With the Devil and Youre No Good are excellent examples that over the years I use as standards when modeling his amp tones.

Check out the metroamp forum. Those dudes have distilled his sound down to a science. In fact, guys like Ralle and Rockstah sound more like EVH than EVH himself. Meaning when he was running cranked plexis instead of supersaturated Peaveys and a shitload of effects. Those guys have clips.

Eruption, then then the intro into "You Really Got Me" doesn't suffice?

There's an isolated track from Panama out there. Pretty definitive, IMHO.

I like the isolated track from "I'm the One". You can really hear the nuances of his picking. That one might have a little too much weedly for what you need, though.

Probably a single take. Listen to this with that in mind, and then get on your knees and bow to the master. In-f-ing-credible.

I think that its cool in Hot for Teacher you can hear him slapping the toggle switch on that Flying V to go between the quiet verse and the heavy bridge....

I was never a huge Van Halen fan but when you listen to this you just gotta say "HOLY CRAP" that guy can play.

any album up to and including 1984
that Hot for Teacher track is amazing. I dont get when people say EVH is all wanking, if you listen to that solo its basically just pentatonic blues box pattern in 2 positions. Nothing technical about it the dude just rips with the same 5 notes Hendrix, Winter and Beck use. |
