6BW6 - a 6V6 in an EL84 bottle
I was trying to find out if there is a beam pentode that can sub for an EL84 and stumbled across the 6BW6. It's described as being electrically identical to 6V6. Anybody familiar with these? Looking at th epinout, it looks like the only difference to EL84 is whether pin 8 or pin 9 is unconnected - so bridging pin 8 and 9 on the socket would provide identical connections to the circuit for either type tube.

As far as I know it should be so. Mullard/ Brimar experimented with some tetrode designs that were intended for drop in replacements for their pentodes. I believe some of the 'EL' that would indicate the valve is a pentode, was infact used on beam tetrode designs as well. Impedance can be one thing to look out for, but w. a 1:2 difference that should be nothing but a moot point. http://tubedata.itchurch.org/sheets/019/6/6BW6.pdf

Looks like plate load (optimum load) impedance is 8k on both tubes in AB. IF I am even reading the right section of the specs right.
EL84 datasheet http://www.tube-amps.net/images/Data...ilips_1969.pdf Very interested in this topic! Thanks whiskyrebel. |

How would I be able to tell if they would be safe to try in an amp I have? It's a Crate VC3112 and it's cathode biased.
