Help a brother out!...

OK, I'm tired of spending money, but I'm gonna get this bridge pickup settled on my Les Paul before it's over with. Tried a WCR God wood, a Peter Florance Voodoo 59 and an Andy Brauer Sheptone Custom...Thought I really had what I wanted in the Sheptone but it's TOO MIDDY and NASALLY sounding..Sounds thin...I want a THICK sounding bridge pup with some MEAT and GROWL to it...I'm playing with 11's and my sound is STILL THIN.. ( Germino Lead55LV and Marshall JCM 800 Dan Torres modified through an old Marshall Cab with 2 Greenbacks and Two Old Cream Colored Celestion Rola's...I want something DARK AND THICK sounding...Swore I would NEVER, EVER go back to a JB but I played one and I have to admit it sounded pretty good...

I know one thing..I DON'T WANT THAT VINTAGE PAF SOUND..I want something with some SUSTAIN and BOTTOM to them..Been thinking about some Water Branes or a Rio Barbeque Bucker...Any suggestions?

A lower value volume pot for the bridge pup would darken things up. Try a 250K-300K in there.

Try a better Les Paul. Pickups don't change the basic sound you get much.

The lower pot value is a good idea. You could try rotating it 180degrees so the screws are on the far side from the bridge. Then keep the height a little low and raise the screws close to the strings. This should add some warmth. It's worth a shot before continuing the swapping game.

You might consider looking at the neck position pickup for what you want. I have a single-coil-size bridge humbucking pickup in the neck position that I really like; a DiMarzio Fast Track II. It's an 18KOhm (yes!) ceramic-based firebreather. It's completely out of balance volume-wise with my 9K '57 in the bridge, but it gives what you're looking for.

And here's another option that's going to put you off simply because it's a lot less expensive than what you've been paying: A Carvin M22SD in the bridge position. It's a nearly 14KOhm Alnico V pickup. One of my favorite bridge pickups.

That said, your amp/cab setup is also suspect. I'm running a modeler with a 1500W SS power amp into a pair of 2x12 cabs with Eminence Delta ProA speakers. The cabs are ported to accommodate the Delta's ability to run at 52Hz, and I've got enough power to produce bottom end at rock volumes (the speakers will handle 400W each). Yours...not so much.

Duncan Custom Custom thickened up a Les Paul that I found to be too bright and thin regardless what I put in there. It was just the trick for that particular guitar.

FWIW, I really like the 498T in a Les Paul. Plenty of meat and growl.

Bought it off Tommy of the Mambo Sons and it is NICE....59 Prehistoric, Bumble Bee Caps. and just LOUD acoustically...I'm beginning to think I'm not a "PAF" guy....Want something with a little more "UMPH"....

+1

Also, an all-mahogany LP like a faded studio will give you a darker sound due to the lack of maple on the guitar.
