so, up to this point, i've been using active monitors... but today is purchasing a vintage pair of JBL studio monitors.
any recommendations on which or what type of amp to get? and do I need a preamp? or just come right off the DAC? the monitors are JBL 4312 any help would be great. thanks Aaron

If your DAC has a volume control, and is standard line level, you shouldn't need a separate preamp.
Bryston and Crown are certainly studio installation standards, and have been for many years. Bryston now being more expensive, but certainly delivering the goods. Quested are also very highly regarded.

I'm using an old Hafler with my Tannoys. It works. I'm surprised at the amount of power the Tannoys want, considering they're very efficient, but they REALLY want to see 100 watts or so.

No reason any decent "audiophile" type amp wouldn't work well.
Adcom NAD Bryston Carver Sunfire KRell Levinson Parasound Proceed etc. www.audiogon.com is a great place to look.

Do not underpower them, whatever you decide.
