My #1 rig: Hamer Monaco III with Lollars and an old Mesa Boogie. (Space Echo optional)

Welcome to the posting side of life.

That's one of the coolest Hamer's I've seen. Everything that is cool about that style of instrument in one guitar. P90's, Bigsby with a thin-line single-cut semi-hollow, Very cool!

Is the Mesa a MkI?

I like it quite a bit, actually. I traded a lightly-used Whammy Reissue for it, due to the input trim control and the footswitches for changing the setting.

It's fun for pseudo-steel guitar stuff, spacey pitch bends and the like but I like the detuned chorus effect the best.

The downside: I have to isolate it with a mini-looper because it does affect the tone, even when the effect is bypassed.

dkaplowitz - how do you like the Grosh? I was the original purchaser and traded it off to Eugene a couple of years ago.

Here is what she looked like when I had her:

Grosh in 2003

Here is the story on the hardware: it originally shipped from Grosh as you have it, with the red shell pickguard and black pickup covers. Someone who wanted to buy the guitar wanted the white shell pickguard and white covers, so the dealer got those parts from Don. That person backed out and I wound up buying it. Eugene recovered the original plastic and restored it.

Hope you enjoy; she's a fine guitar!

Thanks for the history and the pic, John. I'm liking it quite a lot. I'd been craving something really stratty and this one fills the bill quite nicely. This is my first Grosh and I'm really impressed with its playability, tone and with how good the blender tone system is. I keep getting blown away with how you can do tone swells that sound like a wah pedal with these tone knobs....they're so sensitive and effective. I have like 3 favorite settings on it so far and am still learning how to use the vast tonal options that it offers.

Anyway, I'm really happy with it. I can't imagine there could be anything much better than this, but of course now I'm interested in trying several other Grosh guitars. Unfortunately, my money's pretty much dried up for guitars for a couple months, so it might be a while before I try another. I guess my one gripe with it is it's so good looking that it's hard to really want to punish it like a guitar should be. But I'll get over that. If I decide it's a keeper for sure I'll just use and abuse it like it should be, or I'll flip it and get something I won't feel so bad about getting dings on.

I'd be curious to know why you sold it.

Cheers,

Dave

Dave - there were two reasons why I sold it:

1. I have a bad tendonitis problem in my left hand; the neck has more shoulder than other "C" shaped necks so it would, from time to time, cause me a bit of pain while playing.

2. This was my first and only s/s/h loaded guitar, and I decided at that time I preferred to have single-coil-only bolt-neck guitars and humbucker-only set-neck guitars. I also had a John Suhr Classic in a traditional ash body, s/s/s, maple neck configuration that I was playing more, so I did the deal on the Grosh even though the Franlin pickups are increadibly well balanced.

Since 2003 I've also come to a couple of other realizations: I prefer rosewood fingerboards. The Grosh was the first of 3 maple-board strat-types I used for about 18 months (the Grosh, the Suhr, and a Fender Am Dlx V-neck which I got to try living with a "V" shape instead of a "C" shape). The other is I really prefer single coils - strat-type, G&L MFD, and P-90s are all good for me. I love the sound of humbuckers - as long as someone else is playing them.

This is what I'm using at the moment

Here is my Warmoth Strat:

All Korina, Wagner pups, locking tuners & Wilkinson trem.

And these are some of the amps I've used. Currently the MK50H (at the top) with one 2x12 (V30's) is my favorite rig.

The Hellcat is now gone (the MK50H was much nicer to my ears), and the Harlequin was replaced with a Hurricane.

Thanks for the welcome, JT. The M3 is one of those designs I instantly connected with. I haven't really played another guitar since I got it. Perfect balance of function and cool for me.

The MB is a 70s model (#343), so I guess technically it is a MK 1. I've had it for twenty years and I always come back to it. One sound but it's a good one.

That's a great setup. I've always wanted to play a pre Mk series Boogie. I played nothing but MB for years and I still have one of the first run Recto heads. I will be adding a Studio Pre back to my collection before too long. It's such a great sound for soloing.

Ahh... The MK50H... Probably my fave amp that I don't own...
