Chilling. It's all different now, you know. I drove through in the mid-90s and was astonished at the street life.

A story I recall from the 1980s is that some Saudi Arabian money went through and picked up enormous sections of S. Bronx at (literally) fire-sale prices. Any place that close to Manhattan, was the logic, would someday be valuable.

I was born in the Bronx, 1971. We didn't actually live there, that's just where my mom's doctor of choice worked, so that's where I was born. But growing up in Manhattan, I did have some relatives that lived in the Bronx, so I spent quite a bit of time there. Definitely some rough neighborhoods.

Lived there from 84-87 while my wife did her medical residency at Bronx Lebanon Hosp Ctr. Some blocks looked like WWII photos. The art deco buildings on the Grand Concourse were amazing. I hear that there has been a lot of restoration working it's way up the GC. I'd love to see that. The GC was designed to mimic the grand boulevards of Europe. Interesting 3 yrs & yes we were glad to leave. So much so that my wife saved her vacation & we rolled out of there a month early. I do miss the 10 min door to door commute to the Yankee Stadium bleachers though. The "Club Car" on the rush hour D trains was a lot of fun too.

Lived in the South Bronx for about a month in the mid-80's. I was in my late teens -- long story. The neighborhood wasn't as bad as the area in the video, but it wasn't a lot better. Amazing that nothing really bad ever happened to me.

I used to work in the 5 boroughs.

South Bronx and Brooklyn had some of the worst hoods I've seen.
Beyond Scarey.
Doubt the cops rarely ventured into some of these areas
Don't blame them

People used to comment on Harlem.
Harlem is a Garden Paradise compared to other areas.

Man, I'm glad I don't live there anymore.
Finding it hard to believe I once did.

Is it totally different now or the same? I didn't spend much time in the Bronx when I visited NYC except to go the Yankee Stadium. As far as Manhattan went, every square inch of that land is cleaned up and going for big bucks, even the brownstones in Harlem.

Yup. Alphabet City was downright scary when I lived in NY. Now, it's a pretty desirable spot.

I grew up on Long island, and in the late 70's and early 80's my dad used to take me into the Bronx for Yankees games. I remember if we got there early, we used to walk around the stadium, and I vividly remember my dad always saying that we shouldn't be walking too many blocks away from the stadium, as it got dangerous very fast.
