Roccaforte Alert: Marc Ford/Black Crowes sounded great at the New Orleans Jazz Fest

The crowes were sounding sweet on Friday in New Orleans...and especially Marc Ford's 2 Roccafortes prominently displayed behind him....

I don't mean to seem negative but, I've seen alot better concerts. For example, Kenny Wayne Shepherd last fall at the Mobile Fairgrounds kicked the Crowes ass. I think they were pissed because they were playing the Grand Casino in lowly Gulfport, MS. Chris Robinson commented at the start of the show that they were opening for Tony Orlando & Dawn. That set the tone for the evening. They just didn't give it their all & ended the show abruptly after no more than 1.5 hrs. I feel like I didn't get my money's worth. I know they should be capable of putting on a great show but, they didn't kick ass in Gulfport. They acted like playing Gulfport was beneath them & it showed. I have no sympathy for rock groups that think they deserve better. They should try working a real job like the rest of us & see how they like that. Then maybe they would feel differently about playing stinking Gulfport.

I saw them at Jazz Fest in NO and also thought they sounded great. Marc Ford is a superb rock guitarist----no repetitive licks, just the right stuff at the right time, familiar but surprising as well. He has a great sense of time. I wish he had been louder in the mix though.

They seemed pleased to be at Jazz Fest, in front of a HUGE crowd. I actually ran into Chris and his wife Kate Hudson, not once but twice afterwards. They were very nice, IMO, to an excited stranger and fan.

They were very repetitive in Gulfport. As a matter of fact, they drug out several songs with repetitive licks to the point we were saying come on & end it already! Also, they used alot of delay-too much in my opinion. Marc Ford is a great player but, they are just alot of concerts I have seen that were better.

Well bummer I guess you didn't get a good show. We did in N.O....

This post was primarily a vehicle to share with the group that the Roccaforte's sounded great....it's nice to see an amp sounding so good when used in a large scale venue with all the problems of live sound and such. I'd never had a chance to see Doug's product used outside in such a venue...and it was great!

Stranglehold: Sorry you got a bum show, they sure tore it up in Houston.

bluessyndicate: Agreed, Marc through the Roccafortes was just smoking. Marc and Rich both had Fulltone TTEs sitting on top of their rigs, used to perfection I might add.

Marc sounds so good, amazing player.
When we were getting his rig together,
the tone was one of the best I've ever
heard in person.

Just curious, does the TTE only run through one of his heads? Ie, one dry amp, one "wet"?

One is a back-up amp. But sometimes he does
amp switch between the two with a Switchbone.

Doug...

Is Marc currently using Custom 80's with the Crowes? Also, any idea what speakers he's running through?

I have one of your Custom 30's and it's a KILLER sounding amp!

What a beast! That amp is the LOUDEST 30 watts I've every played! It's easily as loud as my old 50 watt Marshalls!

Doug-

I saw them last night in Raleigh, and Marc had a killer tone(Rich's tone was awesome too). Very smooth, articulate, never piercing, and had some serious cholesterol going on in the notes. It reminded me of a Warren Haynes type tone at times.
